Cold and Missing

Part 1 of a 2 part episode on the cold case of Regina Mae Armstrong. Regina, a 6-year-old girl living in Orlando, Florida in 1985, is abducted on June 18th while playing outside with her sister and a babysitter's son. A man approaches them, offering money to the older children to stand guard while he takes Regina to pick up his grandchildren. The man leads Regina away, and despite witnesses seeing them together, she is never found. The police conduct an extensive search, but Regina remains missing. There are sightings of a girl resembling Regina with a man matching the abductor's description, but no concrete leads. The community rallies to support Regina's family, offering rewards and assistance in the search. Despite various sightings and efforts, Regina's whereabouts remain unknown, leaving her family desperate for answers.

00:00:24,560 --> 00:00:27,280
I'm your host, Ali McLaughlin-Sulkowski.

6
00:00:27,280 --> 00:00:29,680
And I'm your co-host, Eli Sulkowski.

7
00:00:29,680 --> 00:00:34,280
And this is Cold and Missing, where we cover cold cases and missing person cases.

8
00:00:34,280 --> 00:00:35,960
Hello everyone and welcome back.

9
00:00:35,960 --> 00:00:37,040
I'm Ali.

10
00:00:37,040 --> 00:00:38,040
And I'm Eli.

11
00:00:38,040 --> 00:00:42,340
So, I have something just slightly different for y'all this week.

12
00:00:42,340 --> 00:00:46,760
We are going to be doing a two-parter episode on the same case.

13
00:00:46,760 --> 00:00:50,640
I know we've kind of done this before, but a little bit of a new format.

14
00:00:50,640 --> 00:00:54,360
Well, I am very interested.

15
00:00:54,360 --> 00:01:01,440
I always enjoy when I'm listening to a podcast when there's an opportunity to go in depth

16
00:01:01,440 --> 00:01:06,520
on cases that usually have very little information about them.

17
00:01:06,520 --> 00:01:09,840
But sometimes when you do some more digging, you find quite a bit more.

18
00:01:09,840 --> 00:01:13,840
I'm looking forward to diving in and learning about this case.

19
00:01:13,840 --> 00:01:18,880
Yeah, and this was definitely one of those cases where there was actually a surprising

20
00:01:18,880 --> 00:01:24,920
amount of information, but this case has just never really been covered much in the media

21
00:01:24,920 --> 00:01:26,560
that I could find.

22
00:01:26,560 --> 00:01:31,280
Do you want to get us started on episode 86, part one?

23
00:01:31,280 --> 00:01:33,080
Yeah, let's do it.

24
00:01:33,080 --> 00:01:38,720
So just as a bit of a content warning at the top, this case does involve a young person.

25
00:01:38,720 --> 00:01:44,760
Today we are talking about the cold case of Regina Mae Armstrong.

26
00:01:44,760 --> 00:01:49,080
And this takes place in June of 1985 in Orlando, Florida.

27
00:01:49,080 --> 00:01:51,880
First, a little bit about Regina.

28
00:01:51,880 --> 00:01:55,800
Regina is six years old in 1985.

29
00:01:55,800 --> 00:01:59,880
She is living in Orlando, Florida with her parents and older sister.

30
00:01:59,880 --> 00:02:03,780
At this time in June, Regina had just finished kindergarten.

31
00:02:03,780 --> 00:02:06,000
She was an outdoorsy young girl.

32
00:02:06,000 --> 00:02:11,580
She liked spending time outside climbing trees and collecting different types of bugs.

33
00:02:11,580 --> 00:02:15,060
Even though she loved getting down in the dirt, she also loved getting dressed up and

34
00:02:15,060 --> 00:02:16,800
having tea parties.

35
00:02:16,800 --> 00:02:20,320
Her parents joked that she had a sophisticated palate.

36
00:02:20,320 --> 00:02:22,800
She was a foodie before we had the term.

37
00:02:22,800 --> 00:02:27,080
She would sit down for three course meals and eat everything and just be happy to be

38
00:02:27,080 --> 00:02:28,080
there.

39
00:02:28,080 --> 00:02:32,080
However, she was still excited to go to McDonald's or Long John Silver's whenever the opportunity

40
00:02:32,080 --> 00:02:33,920
presented itself.

41
00:02:33,920 --> 00:02:37,600
She was always snuggled up to her parents and her older sister would often complain

42
00:02:37,600 --> 00:02:41,120
that her sister was hugging and loving on her too much.

43
00:02:41,120 --> 00:02:44,960
Just an overall really loving girl.

44
00:02:44,960 --> 00:02:48,280
And now a timeline of events.

45
00:02:48,280 --> 00:02:55,880
On Tuesday, June 18th, 1985, Regina's parents, Bob and Donna, both worked full time.

46
00:02:55,880 --> 00:03:01,400
Regina's older sister, Christine, was nine years old in 1985 but already had a host of

47
00:03:01,400 --> 00:03:05,920
medical issues and spent her time in and out of the hospital as a young girl.

48
00:03:05,920 --> 00:03:11,880
With both parents working full time, Bob, Regina's dad, took Christine and Regina to

49
00:03:11,880 --> 00:03:16,560
their babysitter's house on Semarand Boulevard in southeast Orlando.

50
00:03:16,560 --> 00:03:20,200
The babysitter's apartment was just a few blocks from their house.

51
00:03:20,200 --> 00:03:24,400
When they got there, Regina hopped out of her dad's truck and said, quote, Daddy, I

52
00:03:24,400 --> 00:03:25,400
love you.

53
00:03:25,400 --> 00:03:26,400
I'll see you tonight.

54
00:03:26,400 --> 00:03:27,400
End quote.

55
00:03:27,400 --> 00:03:31,400
Regina is three foot six, about 45 pounds.

56
00:03:31,400 --> 00:03:36,800
She had a sunburned scab on her nose and she was wearing a blue and green flower dress.

57
00:03:36,800 --> 00:03:41,400
Bob drove to work, not knowing that this would be the last time he would see Regina.

58
00:03:41,400 --> 00:03:43,240
The morning was pretty uneventful.

59
00:03:43,240 --> 00:03:47,800
By the time the girls had lunch, they wanted to play outside, so they headed outdoors with

60
00:03:47,800 --> 00:03:50,280
the babysitter's younger brother to play.

61
00:03:50,280 --> 00:03:52,680
Regina is not wearing shoes.

62
00:03:52,680 --> 00:03:57,200
The kids were playing behind the apartment building in the parking lot when a man approached

63
00:03:57,200 --> 00:03:58,760
them around noon.

64
00:03:58,760 --> 00:04:03,240
The man is around six feet tall with a medium build and dark bushy hair.

65
00:04:03,240 --> 00:04:08,400
He was thought to be in his late 30s or early 40s, but later reports will put him between

66
00:04:08,400 --> 00:04:10,880
the ages of 20 and 40.

67
00:04:10,880 --> 00:04:16,360
He was wearing a brown, blue, and white plaid short sleeve shirt with silver snaps, faded

68
00:04:16,360 --> 00:04:19,040
blue jeans, and a gold watch.

69
00:04:19,040 --> 00:04:24,120
His upper lip was split and busted as if he had been in a fight recently, and he was missing

70
00:04:24,120 --> 00:04:26,760
two teeth on one side of his mouth.

71
00:04:26,760 --> 00:04:30,560
There's a possibility he had a tattoo on his left forearm.

72
00:04:30,560 --> 00:04:35,400
Christine would later recall, quote, he smelled oily, like he worked for a mechanic or on

73
00:04:35,400 --> 00:04:36,400
cars.

74
00:04:36,400 --> 00:04:39,160
He didn't seem like a normal guy, end quote.

75
00:04:39,160 --> 00:04:41,400
The man also reeked of alcohol.

76
00:04:41,400 --> 00:04:44,280
The man leaves and the kids continue to play outside.

77
00:04:44,280 --> 00:04:46,920
However, he returns around 3 p.m.

78
00:04:46,920 --> 00:04:52,760
This time, he offers Christine and the babysitter's younger brother $2 to stand guard outside

79
00:04:52,760 --> 00:04:54,040
of an apartment.

80
00:04:54,040 --> 00:04:56,880
The man said that it belonged to him and his wife.

81
00:04:56,880 --> 00:05:02,560
He then told Regina, quote, to come with me and pick up my grandchildren, end quote.

82
00:05:02,560 --> 00:05:06,780
He told Regina that she could play with them as they were her age and that he would bring

83
00:05:06,780 --> 00:05:09,120
her home in 30 minutes.

84
00:05:09,120 --> 00:05:12,480
Christine and the boy take the money and Regina went with the man.

85
00:05:12,480 --> 00:05:17,200
Christine last saw Regina walking east with the man away from the parking lot.

86
00:05:17,200 --> 00:05:21,000
However, after a few minutes, Christine starts to get worried.

87
00:05:21,000 --> 00:05:25,480
Just the week before her school, before the school year had ended, had put on a program

88
00:05:25,480 --> 00:05:29,720
about stranger danger and it dawned on her that something bad could have happened to

89
00:05:29,720 --> 00:05:30,840
her sister.

90
00:05:30,840 --> 00:05:36,160
Her and the babysitter's brother ran back to the apartment and explained what had happened.

91
00:05:36,160 --> 00:05:39,180
However, the babysitter doesn't spring into action.

92
00:05:39,180 --> 00:05:42,840
She instead locks the front door of the apartment and ignores Christine.

93
00:05:42,840 --> 00:05:45,480
Meanwhile, Regina is nowhere to be found.

94
00:05:45,480 --> 00:05:48,560
The babysitter simply thought that Christine was being dramatic.

95
00:05:48,560 --> 00:05:53,560
A little after four in the afternoon, Donna, Christine and Regina's mom, arrived at the

96
00:05:53,560 --> 00:05:56,000
babysitter's apartment to pick the girls up.

97
00:05:56,000 --> 00:06:01,360
Donna is greeted at the door by a hysterical Christine saying, quote, a man took my sister.

98
00:06:01,360 --> 00:06:03,520
He took her away, end quote.

99
00:06:03,520 --> 00:06:08,360
Donna springs into action and calls her husband to get over here and help search.

100
00:06:08,360 --> 00:06:12,720
Bob had just arrived at the family home, which was only a few blocks away.

101
00:06:12,720 --> 00:06:17,440
After hanging up with Donna, he calls the police to report Regina missing before heading

102
00:06:17,440 --> 00:06:19,720
over to the apartment to help search.

103
00:06:19,720 --> 00:06:24,720
Immediately, the police respond, but they're already at least 90 minutes behind Regina's

104
00:06:24,720 --> 00:06:25,720
abductor.

105
00:06:25,720 --> 00:06:30,320
Regina's sister and the other child are questioned that evening about the appearance of the man

106
00:06:30,320 --> 00:06:32,960
and a composite sketch is created.

107
00:06:32,960 --> 00:06:37,160
About 70 officers will search around the apartment until midnight.

108
00:06:37,160 --> 00:06:41,520
Officers will continue to search through the night for Regina, but by the next morning,

109
00:06:41,520 --> 00:06:47,100
on Wednesday, June 19th, police start going door to door looking for witnesses or if anyone

110
00:06:47,100 --> 00:06:49,040
had seen this man before.

111
00:06:49,040 --> 00:06:54,640
By the afternoon, about 20 officers on motorcycles stop people on the street to ask if they have

112
00:06:54,640 --> 00:06:55,880
seen the man before.

113
00:06:55,880 --> 00:07:00,080
They stop into local businesses around the apartment to see if anyone has seen him or

114
00:07:00,080 --> 00:07:02,160
recognize him.

115
00:07:02,160 --> 00:07:07,520
Regina's missing person flyers begin to appear all around Orlando almost overnight.

116
00:07:07,520 --> 00:07:11,600
On the flyer is Regina's picture and the composite sketch of the man.

117
00:07:11,600 --> 00:07:16,960
Local media begin to report on Regina's abduction and the composite sketch of the man is plastered

118
00:07:16,960 --> 00:07:17,960
all over the news.

119
00:07:17,960 --> 00:07:24,200
A nine-year-old girl, Elisa, was watching the news at her home in Cocoa Beach, which

120
00:07:24,200 --> 00:07:26,800
is only about an hour away from Orlando.

121
00:07:26,800 --> 00:07:31,720
She saw the sketch and instantly recognized the man as her and her younger sister had

122
00:07:31,720 --> 00:07:34,080
almost been victims of a kidnapping.

123
00:07:34,080 --> 00:07:39,200
In their case, Elisa and her younger sister, Erin, were sleeping in their bedroom Saturday

124
00:07:39,200 --> 00:07:43,200
night, about three days before Regina's kidnapped.

125
00:07:43,200 --> 00:07:48,160
When a man entered through their bedroom window and lifted Erin out of the window, Elisa woke

126
00:07:48,160 --> 00:07:52,120
up and saw what was happening and started screaming for her parents.

127
00:07:52,120 --> 00:07:56,580
The man was scared off and left Erin on the ground outside of her window while he sprinted

128
00:07:56,580 --> 00:07:58,360
away through their backyard.

129
00:07:58,360 --> 00:08:03,520
Both Elisa and Erin recognized the composite sketch as the man that entered their bedroom.

130
00:08:03,520 --> 00:08:08,520
Police from Orlando and Cocoa Beach compare the composite sketches in both of their cases

131
00:08:08,520 --> 00:08:10,700
and they're eerily similar.

132
00:08:10,700 --> 00:08:13,840
Police continue to go door to door looking for witnesses.

133
00:08:13,840 --> 00:08:16,280
Her family beg for her safe return.

134
00:08:16,280 --> 00:08:19,600
Her dad, Bob, says, quote, who's ever got my daughter?

135
00:08:19,600 --> 00:08:21,000
Please bring her home.

136
00:08:21,000 --> 00:08:22,620
Her mother and I miss her.

137
00:08:22,620 --> 00:08:23,620
We love her.

138
00:08:23,620 --> 00:08:25,160
We want her back safe.

139
00:08:25,160 --> 00:08:26,160
End quote.

140
00:08:26,160 --> 00:08:30,880
Bob says that Regina knows her address and phone number and quote, if she could, she

141
00:08:30,880 --> 00:08:31,880
would call.

142
00:08:31,880 --> 00:08:35,860
If she could hear or see me, I tell her, Gina, daddy's not mad at you.

143
00:08:35,860 --> 00:08:37,940
You haven't done anything wrong.

144
00:08:37,940 --> 00:08:39,520
Please please come home.

145
00:08:39,520 --> 00:08:40,520
End quote.

146
00:08:40,520 --> 00:08:45,400
Police also offers a $5,000 reward for the return of Regina.

147
00:08:45,400 --> 00:08:50,400
It's right about this time that police find a neighbor who had seen Regina and the man

148
00:08:50,400 --> 00:08:52,120
the day of the abduction.

149
00:08:52,120 --> 00:08:58,580
She tells police that at around 3 30 p.m. she saw Regina walking beside the man.

150
00:08:58,580 --> 00:09:03,280
It looks like they were headed towards Inglewood Park, which is about six blocks from the apartment

151
00:09:03,280 --> 00:09:04,680
complex.

152
00:09:04,680 --> 00:09:08,420
Police search every inch of the park, but nothing is found.

153
00:09:08,420 --> 00:09:10,940
Police find a few other witnesses.

154
00:09:10,940 --> 00:09:15,560
A convenience store clerk says that he saw the man walking by himself along Summerin

155
00:09:15,560 --> 00:09:19,900
Boulevard when he entered the store, bought something and left.

156
00:09:19,900 --> 00:09:24,960
In Regina's case, really all of the stops are pulled out in this search.

157
00:09:24,960 --> 00:09:30,080
They have officers going door to door, searching through the night, the motorcycle officers

158
00:09:30,080 --> 00:09:35,160
patrolling the streets, officers on horseback searching fields.

159
00:09:35,160 --> 00:09:39,600
Police even bring in sent dogs and helicopters.

160
00:09:39,600 --> 00:09:42,560
Every available officer is searching for Regina.

161
00:09:42,560 --> 00:09:48,740
However, by Friday, June 21st, Regina has been missing for three days.

162
00:09:48,740 --> 00:09:50,860
Police call off the official search.

163
00:09:50,860 --> 00:09:56,360
They have found no physical trace of Regina, but we're able to find several witnesses

164
00:09:56,360 --> 00:09:58,440
that saw the two walking together.

165
00:09:58,440 --> 00:10:03,440
The lead investigator in the case, Detective Mary Ann Waits says, quote, We want to believe

166
00:10:03,440 --> 00:10:06,720
that she is alive, and I believe we will find her.

167
00:10:06,720 --> 00:10:11,160
The biggest break, we believe, will come from the public, from someone who will spot Regina

168
00:10:11,160 --> 00:10:13,000
or the man who took her.

169
00:10:13,000 --> 00:10:15,560
They've got to move around to eat, sleep and travel.

170
00:10:15,560 --> 00:10:21,080
What we need now is for everyone to keep their eyes and ears open, and if they see anyone

171
00:10:21,080 --> 00:10:24,080
matching the description, to call us immediately.

172
00:10:24,080 --> 00:10:25,080
End quote.

173
00:10:25,080 --> 00:10:29,380
Regina's family remains hopeful that she'll come home, but they're getting desperate

174
00:10:29,380 --> 00:10:33,540
for information and have even thought about reaching out to psychics.

175
00:10:33,540 --> 00:10:37,840
Her dad says, quote, I know that doesn't work a lot, but at this point, we'll try

176
00:10:37,840 --> 00:10:38,840
anything.

177
00:10:38,840 --> 00:10:42,880
We've just talked about it, and I don't think we'll do anything for a few days at

178
00:10:42,880 --> 00:10:43,880
least.

179
00:10:43,880 --> 00:10:47,400
We don't want to jump the gun, but we don't want to wait too long.

180
00:10:47,400 --> 00:10:48,400
End quote.

181
00:10:48,400 --> 00:10:52,820
They've also thought about having Christine hypnotized to see if she can recall any more

182
00:10:52,820 --> 00:10:54,940
details about the kidnapper.

183
00:10:54,940 --> 00:10:59,300
The Orlando community is eager to help in the search for Regina.

184
00:10:59,300 --> 00:11:03,080
Community members come forward, volunteering to do anything.

185
00:11:03,080 --> 00:11:06,680
Answer tip lines, do paperwork, go out and search.

186
00:11:06,680 --> 00:11:08,800
Grocery stores drop off food.

187
00:11:08,800 --> 00:11:12,600
Local restaurants tell the family they can eat free of charge.

188
00:11:12,600 --> 00:11:17,200
Hotels offer to put up family coming in to help for the search for free.

189
00:11:17,200 --> 00:11:21,880
This is really one of the most beautiful examples of everyone doing what they can for Regina

190
00:11:21,880 --> 00:11:23,540
and her family.

191
00:11:23,540 --> 00:11:28,480
As investigators continue to work the case, police start to believe that the Cocoa Beach

192
00:11:28,480 --> 00:11:31,200
attempted kidnapping is not related.

193
00:11:31,200 --> 00:11:35,900
Detective Waits says, quote, there are some significant differences.

194
00:11:35,900 --> 00:11:41,140
We can't completely eliminate the possibility that the two suspects are the same, but based

195
00:11:41,140 --> 00:11:44,400
on what I know right now, it doesn't appear so.

196
00:11:44,400 --> 00:11:46,160
We are still looking into it.

197
00:11:46,160 --> 00:11:47,360
End quote.

198
00:11:47,360 --> 00:11:51,480
Over the next week, police begin to work the leads that they developed during their initial

199
00:11:51,480 --> 00:11:55,580
search, and they continue to man a 24-hour tip line.

200
00:11:55,580 --> 00:12:00,200
As police slowly work their way through the leads, they keep coming up empty.

201
00:12:00,200 --> 00:12:03,600
No Regina, no man with a busted lip.

202
00:12:03,600 --> 00:12:09,840
As police approach a week that Regina has been missing, they use 130 Navy cadets to

203
00:12:09,840 --> 00:12:14,160
search an 18-mile square radius for any trace of Regina.

204
00:12:14,160 --> 00:12:18,960
Originally, police only searched a 6- to 8-mile square radius.

205
00:12:18,960 --> 00:12:24,640
But with the additional manpower, the searchers will search a larger area and all the abandoned

206
00:12:24,640 --> 00:12:31,020
buildings, woods, swamps, canals, creeks, and any other secluded area they happen upon.

207
00:12:31,020 --> 00:12:33,680
Her family remains firm that she is alive.

208
00:12:33,680 --> 00:12:39,080
Her dad says, quote, we believe she is alive, and until someone shows us differently, we'll

209
00:12:39,080 --> 00:12:40,840
never believe otherwise.

210
00:12:40,840 --> 00:12:42,360
We're not going to give up.

211
00:12:42,360 --> 00:12:46,280
We'll find our daughter, if it takes the rest of our lives.

212
00:12:46,280 --> 00:12:49,360
Deep down in our hearts, we believe she's coming home.

213
00:12:49,360 --> 00:12:50,360
End quote.

214
00:12:50,360 --> 00:12:54,420
The family spend each day of the search at the command center, waiting for any leads

215
00:12:54,420 --> 00:12:56,000
about Regina.

216
00:12:56,000 --> 00:12:59,120
But the search concludes with no trace of her.

217
00:12:59,120 --> 00:13:04,880
The search did unearth other skeletal remains of a young man who was later ID'd as William

218
00:13:04,880 --> 00:13:06,240
Legg.

219
00:13:06,240 --> 00:13:11,920
At this point, the search for Regina is the largest in Orlando's history.

220
00:13:11,920 --> 00:13:16,900
Despite the search for Regina turning up nothing, there are several people who called in reporting

221
00:13:16,900 --> 00:13:20,980
to see the man and Regina all over Orlando.

222
00:13:20,980 --> 00:13:26,200
One story that keeps popping up again and again are witnesses calling in to say that

223
00:13:26,200 --> 00:13:32,960
they see a girl resembling Regina in the company of two men, one of which resembles the composite

224
00:13:32,960 --> 00:13:33,960
sketch.

225
00:13:33,960 --> 00:13:41,960
The trio is seen in a beige or brown vehicle, a mid to late 1970s car, possibly an Oldsmobile

226
00:13:41,960 --> 00:13:43,800
Delta 88.

227
00:13:43,800 --> 00:13:49,400
A housekeeper in a small roadside motel calls police saying that two men checked into a

228
00:13:49,400 --> 00:13:51,840
room with a young child.

229
00:13:51,840 --> 00:13:56,360
One of the men resembled the composite sketch and the little girl looked like Regina.

230
00:13:56,360 --> 00:13:59,640
When police arrive, they check the room, but no one is inside.

231
00:13:59,640 --> 00:14:06,440
What they do find is a copy of Regina's missing person flyer torn into little pieces.

232
00:14:06,440 --> 00:14:10,800
On June 25th, there is another possible sighting of the man.

233
00:14:10,800 --> 00:14:14,960
Regina has been missing for a week when a man fitting the description of the suspect

234
00:14:14,960 --> 00:14:18,480
walked into a Popeyes restaurant at around 10 p.m.

235
00:14:18,480 --> 00:14:22,680
He asked the person behind the counter if they could open a can of ravioli.

236
00:14:22,680 --> 00:14:26,800
The workers at the restaurant recognize the man from the composite sketch.

237
00:14:26,800 --> 00:14:30,920
An assistant manager heads to the back to call police while the cashier tried to keep

238
00:14:30,920 --> 00:14:31,920
him busy.

239
00:14:31,920 --> 00:14:35,560
While the manager was still on the phone, the man turned around and left.

240
00:14:35,560 --> 00:14:40,220
However, outside the restaurant, two teen boys see the man leave the Popeyes and follow

241
00:14:40,220 --> 00:14:41,760
him to a brown car.

242
00:14:41,760 --> 00:14:47,280
The man gets in the car and heads north on Orange Blossom Trail in Orlando.

243
00:14:47,280 --> 00:14:49,840
The teens did not get a license plate.

244
00:14:49,840 --> 00:14:54,880
Lieutenant Steve Harrelson says, quote, They followed him because he left hurriedly and

245
00:14:54,880 --> 00:14:57,800
they could tell there was some kind of commotion about him.

246
00:14:57,800 --> 00:15:02,720
Basically, they just walked behind him in the parking lot until he got into his car.

247
00:15:02,720 --> 00:15:07,160
The description they gave was about the same as what the Popeyes worker did.

248
00:15:07,160 --> 00:15:08,160
End quote.

249
00:15:08,160 --> 00:15:12,840
Regina's parents are very hopeful that this is a good sign.

250
00:15:12,840 --> 00:15:15,660
Ravioli was one of her favorite foods.

251
00:15:15,660 --> 00:15:21,560
On June 27th, police come forward with all the possible sightings of Regina and the man

252
00:15:21,560 --> 00:15:23,840
over the last week.

253
00:15:23,840 --> 00:15:28,560
After this press conference, however, the reported sightings of Regina and the man will

254
00:15:28,560 --> 00:15:32,920
slow down and eventually stop over the next few weeks.

255
00:15:32,920 --> 00:15:37,400
So that is where we are going to leave part one of the timeline.

256
00:15:37,400 --> 00:15:43,040
Next week, we'll get into covering part two with a few additional details about the search,

257
00:15:43,040 --> 00:15:49,000
how and where her body was found and how she's eventually identified as Regina and where

258
00:15:49,000 --> 00:15:52,000
the case stands as of 2024.

259
00:15:52,000 --> 00:15:56,720
If you know anything about the abduction and murder of Regina Mae Armstrong in June of

260
00:15:56,720 --> 00:16:04,080
1985, please call Crime Line at 1-800-423-8477.

261
00:16:04,080 --> 00:16:09,260
And the sources for the timeline today come from Florida Today, the Orlando Sentinel,

262
00:16:09,260 --> 00:16:12,440
the Miami Herald, and News Press.

263
00:16:12,440 --> 00:16:18,720
So that is part one of the Regina Mae Armstrong cold case.

264
00:16:18,720 --> 00:16:21,360
So this is just really her abduction.

265
00:16:21,360 --> 00:16:32,680
I had to like kind of table in my mind knowing that this was a cold case because it was just

266
00:16:32,680 --> 00:16:35,600
tugging at my heartstrings the whole time.

267
00:16:35,600 --> 00:16:42,960
But there are a few things I just wanted to say about Regina because one, she sounded

268
00:16:42,960 --> 00:16:44,760
incredible.

269
00:16:44,760 --> 00:16:50,960
She sounded like my nieces, our nieces.

270
00:16:50,960 --> 00:16:56,680
And that happens a lot, you know, when you bring up cases with kids, but particularly

271
00:16:56,680 --> 00:16:58,040
her taste for food.

272
00:16:58,040 --> 00:17:05,200
My nieces love when my dad grills up steak.

273
00:17:05,200 --> 00:17:13,160
A similar spirit and while it made me so happy to know that, you know, a soul like that existed,

274
00:17:13,160 --> 00:17:19,600
it was equally as heartbreaking to know that she isn't here in the way that she should

275
00:17:19,600 --> 00:17:20,600
be.

276
00:17:20,600 --> 00:17:21,600
Absolutely.

277
00:17:21,600 --> 00:17:25,200
This case is so heartbreaking.

278
00:17:25,200 --> 00:17:26,640
Yeah.

279
00:17:26,640 --> 00:17:33,520
What made me so happy to know that she had this joy and love for food was that I imagine

280
00:17:33,520 --> 00:17:40,800
she had to do some growing up even at the young age of six because it can be quite traumatizing

281
00:17:40,800 --> 00:17:46,280
to be the sibling of a sibling who is sick all the time.

282
00:17:46,280 --> 00:17:47,280
It can be very scary.

283
00:17:47,280 --> 00:17:50,560
It can be isolating.

284
00:17:50,560 --> 00:17:57,120
And you might have to, you know, just understand things way sooner than a child should have

285
00:17:57,120 --> 00:17:58,120
to understand.

286
00:17:58,120 --> 00:18:05,680
So again, equally as heartbreaking, it still, it brought me joy to know that she enjoyed

287
00:18:05,680 --> 00:18:09,120
like the finer things in life at such a young age.

288
00:18:09,120 --> 00:18:10,120
Absolutely.

289
00:18:10,120 --> 00:18:14,800
I thought that detail was really fun about her being a foodie and sitting down to three

290
00:18:14,800 --> 00:18:20,200
course meals, just like this little six year old at the table ready to experience fine

291
00:18:20,200 --> 00:18:22,880
dining is just a really funny image.

292
00:18:22,880 --> 00:18:27,640
And I think that really captures her spirit when you see her pictures.

293
00:18:27,640 --> 00:18:31,360
Like you can tell she was like a funny little lady.

294
00:18:31,360 --> 00:18:33,080
Yeah, totally.

295
00:18:33,080 --> 00:18:37,300
I do have some questions if it's okay to move on.

296
00:18:37,300 --> 00:18:43,600
My first question to you was, do you think it was someone she knew?

297
00:18:43,600 --> 00:18:50,000
I don't think that Regina had met him or really seen him before based off of Christine.

298
00:18:50,000 --> 00:18:54,000
Since she was just a little bit older, nine years older, or not nine years, but she was

299
00:18:54,000 --> 00:18:55,920
nine years old.

300
00:18:55,920 --> 00:19:01,800
I think that if she had met this man before, she would be able to recognize him and like

301
00:19:01,800 --> 00:19:04,840
explain who he was to her parents.

302
00:19:04,840 --> 00:19:11,240
So I kind of based it off of Christine not knowing who the man was beyond his description.

303
00:19:11,240 --> 00:19:17,000
But if that man had been watching the kids and kind of seeing the schedule as the summer

304
00:19:17,000 --> 00:19:22,120
vacation started, I think that could be a possibility where maybe he was watching, learning

305
00:19:22,120 --> 00:19:26,800
a schedule, learning a routine when the kids are outside, that sort of thing.

306
00:19:26,800 --> 00:19:29,720
I think that is in the realm of possibilities.

307
00:19:29,720 --> 00:19:30,720
Totally.

308
00:19:30,720 --> 00:19:35,000
I mean, just horrific predator behavior.

309
00:19:35,000 --> 00:19:40,200
And I also just want to like echo here, and I'm sure you've heard it on other podcasts

310
00:19:40,200 --> 00:19:47,880
before involving true crime, but adults do not need help from children.

311
00:19:47,880 --> 00:19:48,960
Not at all.

312
00:19:48,960 --> 00:19:49,960
It's never needed.

313
00:19:49,960 --> 00:19:51,460
It's never necessary.

314
00:19:51,460 --> 00:20:00,760
So the babysitter, I'm sure she probably lives with a lot of guilt, but like, man, am I just

315
00:20:00,760 --> 00:20:05,080
furious, especially because the information is brand new to me.

316
00:20:05,080 --> 00:20:11,480
But for the life of me, I do not understand that reaction.

317
00:20:11,480 --> 00:20:17,080
And that made me wonder a bunch of things.

318
00:20:17,080 --> 00:20:18,640
What's your take on her reaction?

319
00:20:18,640 --> 00:20:24,280
Yeah, the babysitter is definitely an important player in the timeline.

320
00:20:24,280 --> 00:20:27,920
So the babysitter is relatively young.

321
00:20:27,920 --> 00:20:29,680
She's 21 years old.

322
00:20:29,680 --> 00:20:36,240
I was like, I was thinking, I thought, I thought she was like 14.

323
00:20:36,240 --> 00:20:43,200
I'm even more angry and I feel less bad about how angry I am, because that's not that is

324
00:20:43,200 --> 00:20:45,240
not a correct reaction.

325
00:20:45,240 --> 00:20:54,000
If three children leave and two come back, five minutes pass, you should be booking it.

326
00:20:54,000 --> 00:20:58,440
And I know it was the 80s, but like, they're not your kids.

327
00:20:58,440 --> 00:20:59,440
I don't know.

328
00:20:59,440 --> 00:21:00,440
Totally.

329
00:21:00,440 --> 00:21:02,600
No, I agree with you 100%.

330
00:21:02,600 --> 00:21:08,800
It's really hard to wrap your head around the fact that she closes and locks the door,

331
00:21:08,800 --> 00:21:12,960
according to newspaper, she closes the front door, locks it.

332
00:21:12,960 --> 00:21:18,520
And I just don't understand how you explain that away to yourself for the next hour and

333
00:21:18,520 --> 00:21:20,960
a half until the mom gets there.

334
00:21:20,960 --> 00:21:25,680
You know, I don't know how you explain that to yourself that two kids came back, but one

335
00:21:25,680 --> 00:21:28,320
isn't here and the front door is locked.

336
00:21:28,320 --> 00:21:33,400
So even if she was to wander up, she couldn't get in, she would have to stand there and

337
00:21:33,400 --> 00:21:34,720
knock at the door.

338
00:21:34,720 --> 00:21:39,960
And these apartments are ones that you can see the door from the outside, almost like

339
00:21:39,960 --> 00:21:41,580
a motel setup.

340
00:21:41,580 --> 00:21:48,920
So that is really disappointing that the babysitter did not respond faster.

341
00:21:48,920 --> 00:21:54,700
I believe she is cleared of involvement according to the newspaper reports.

342
00:21:54,700 --> 00:22:00,880
And even Regina's parents don't put a lot of blame on her for not calling police right

343
00:22:00,880 --> 00:22:01,880
away.

344
00:22:01,880 --> 00:22:06,480
They say in the week following that they're not mad at the babysitter.

345
00:22:06,480 --> 00:22:13,480
But as somebody researching and learning about it, it is hard to understand that reaction

346
00:22:13,480 --> 00:22:15,800
and why she responded that way.

347
00:22:15,800 --> 00:22:19,560
And if this would have turned out different, had she been quicker?

348
00:22:19,560 --> 00:22:23,920
Yeah, I mean, the kids came back relatively soon.

349
00:22:23,920 --> 00:22:31,120
If you had immediately walked outside, she had a shot and missed it big time.

350
00:22:31,120 --> 00:22:35,560
And that raises a lot of questions in my mind.

351
00:22:35,560 --> 00:22:39,080
Like, why would you lock the door?

352
00:22:39,080 --> 00:22:45,480
It is such an odd response to not immediately hop into action.

353
00:22:45,480 --> 00:22:52,520
Yeah, I think that based off of the neighborhood sightings that police were able to find, you

354
00:22:52,520 --> 00:23:00,560
know, in their door to door canvassing, I do think that had she called police right away,

355
00:23:00,560 --> 00:23:06,400
that there is a possibility they could have found they could have found her because police

356
00:23:06,400 --> 00:23:12,600
saw them and or not police saw them, but witnesses saw them walking along a route, it seems like.

357
00:23:12,600 --> 00:23:15,380
And police respond immediately and heavily.

358
00:23:15,380 --> 00:23:21,280
So had that response come quicker, I think that there is a chance that they could have

359
00:23:21,280 --> 00:23:23,340
intercepted them.

360
00:23:23,340 --> 00:23:31,480
My question about the the sighting at 3.30 p.m. I wrote that down as I was listening

361
00:23:31,480 --> 00:23:36,280
to you, but I don't remember what it refers to.

362
00:23:36,280 --> 00:23:45,800
I think the neighbor said that she saw her at 3.30, possibly with this this man.

363
00:23:45,800 --> 00:23:50,920
But what was the window of time they were outside playing like was 3.30 significantly

364
00:23:50,920 --> 00:23:54,000
later? That's that's what I couldn't remember.

365
00:23:54,000 --> 00:24:01,240
So they're outside playing, it seems like from around noon till 3.

366
00:24:01,240 --> 00:24:07,920
The man first approaches the kids around noon, according to initial reporting, and then he

367
00:24:07,920 --> 00:24:10,280
comes back around three.

368
00:24:10,280 --> 00:24:17,000
And that's when he offers the money to Christine and the young boy.

369
00:24:17,000 --> 00:24:19,580
And he takes Regina with him.

370
00:24:19,580 --> 00:24:28,360
So 3.30 would have been, I would say, probably within 15 minutes of her being abducted.

371
00:24:28,360 --> 00:24:30,160
I'm sorry, I keep coming back.

372
00:24:30,160 --> 00:24:33,600
It's just heartbreaking because she was out there.

373
00:24:33,600 --> 00:24:38,560
Something else I wrote down was it seemed like she was right at the at like the authorities

374
00:24:38,560 --> 00:24:40,960
fingertips the entire time.

375
00:24:40,960 --> 00:24:46,240
And that's extra, you know, just a punch in the gut because she was right there.

376
00:24:46,240 --> 00:24:54,600
You said that the possible suspect stopped at a convenience store on that day, correct?

377
00:24:54,600 --> 00:25:02,920
Yes, it's unclear if that was before the abduction kind of between that noon encounter and the

378
00:25:02,920 --> 00:25:04,720
3pm abduction.

379
00:25:04,720 --> 00:25:06,620
But he was alone.

380
00:25:06,620 --> 00:25:08,080
We're not sure what he bought.

381
00:25:08,080 --> 00:25:12,080
But he was alone when he entered the convenience store.

382
00:25:12,080 --> 00:25:15,080
That was exactly what my question was going to be.

383
00:25:15,080 --> 00:25:19,840
I know you spoke on it briefly and I couldn't I couldn't have said it better.

384
00:25:19,840 --> 00:25:28,200
But the community's response was really incredible here, down to the young folks at the Popeyes.

385
00:25:28,200 --> 00:25:32,360
Him coming in and asking to open a can of ravioli.

386
00:25:32,360 --> 00:25:37,680
You know, I've worked in service before where people have needed something extra from the

387
00:25:37,680 --> 00:25:41,060
kitchen or kitchen staff to help feed their baby.

388
00:25:41,060 --> 00:25:43,280
It's not something that's like unheard of.

389
00:25:43,280 --> 00:25:46,680
But a can of raviolis is very odd.

390
00:25:46,680 --> 00:25:52,280
And I'm glad that the community had papered, you know, his composite sketch as much as

391
00:25:52,280 --> 00:25:55,720
they did because those kids saw it and said something.

392
00:25:55,720 --> 00:26:01,160
Not only the workers at Popeyes, but then the young boys outside who continued to follow

393
00:26:01,160 --> 00:26:02,480
him.

394
00:26:02,480 --> 00:26:04,600
That was just incredible to me.

395
00:26:04,600 --> 00:26:06,960
Like hell yeah, I don't know who you are.

396
00:26:06,960 --> 00:26:09,720
But like, thank you for doing that.

397
00:26:09,720 --> 00:26:15,600
Yeah, it's not quite clear if the two boys that followed him in the parking lot understood

398
00:26:15,600 --> 00:26:18,760
that he was the suspect if they were conscious of that.

399
00:26:18,760 --> 00:26:25,480
But it seems like police they just kind of like saw this guy kind of get in get out like

400
00:26:25,480 --> 00:26:27,600
kind of causing a commotion as it were.

401
00:26:27,600 --> 00:26:31,440
So they just like followed him for a while, which is really interesting.

402
00:26:31,440 --> 00:26:35,680
But some newspaper reports say that they chased him because they did recognize him.

403
00:26:35,680 --> 00:26:39,040
So yeah, but that's all community response.

404
00:26:39,040 --> 00:26:43,440
Everyone put up flyers, businesses offered to print them, pay for them, whatever was

405
00:26:43,440 --> 00:26:46,600
needed to get them everywhere in Orlando.

406
00:26:46,600 --> 00:26:50,560
Yeah, just an incredible response.

407
00:26:50,560 --> 00:26:52,960
And you know, Orlando is a pretty big place.

408
00:26:52,960 --> 00:26:53,960
It's very busy.

409
00:26:53,960 --> 00:26:57,700
It's a it's a tourist area of the nation.

410
00:26:57,700 --> 00:27:05,800
So the fact that this like smaller knit community there really stuck together and showed up

411
00:27:05,800 --> 00:27:08,440
for this family was was beautiful.

412
00:27:08,440 --> 00:27:16,400
Yeah, I mean, I guess that brings us up to like right where you left us off.

413
00:27:16,400 --> 00:27:17,920
I'm very eager to hear more.

414
00:27:17,920 --> 00:27:23,680
I'm so glad that you brought her name to the front of our minds.

415
00:27:23,680 --> 00:27:30,520
I imagine our listeners, especially as we've been growing in numbers, month by month will

416
00:27:30,520 --> 00:27:36,300
do some googling and I really hope you do because this case deserves as much attention

417
00:27:36,300 --> 00:27:38,440
as as any other case out there.

418
00:27:38,440 --> 00:27:40,720
I think it's completely solvable.

419
00:27:40,720 --> 00:27:47,080
I think it happened recent enough that there are still people alive who have information.

420
00:27:47,080 --> 00:27:48,560
Maybe someone knows something.

421
00:27:48,560 --> 00:27:53,920
Yeah, thank you so much for sharing Regina's story.

422
00:27:53,920 --> 00:27:56,840
It's heartbreaking, but I'm so glad to know it now.

423
00:27:56,840 --> 00:28:02,300
Again, if you know anything about the abduction and murder of Regina Mae Armstrong in June

424
00:28:02,300 --> 00:28:09,800
of 1985, please call Crime Line at 1-800-423-8477.

425
00:28:09,800 --> 00:28:15,900
And we will be bringing you part two next week where we get into the discovery of Regina.

426
00:28:15,900 --> 00:28:20,360
If you're anything like me, which you probably are if you're listening to this podcast, I'm

427
00:28:20,360 --> 00:28:23,920
sure you will be digging into your own research this week.

428
00:28:23,920 --> 00:28:30,600
But there's a lot of articles that are behind paywalls, but I do have access to them.

429
00:28:30,600 --> 00:28:36,420
So I will be bringing you all that information next week and we'll get into part two.

430
00:28:36,420 --> 00:28:41,920
In the meantime, we'll have pictures of Regina and the suspects on our Instagram, which you

431
00:28:41,920 --> 00:28:44,320
can check us out at Cold and Missing.

432
00:28:44,320 --> 00:28:49,960
Like Eli said, I do think this case is completely solvable and I think part of it is because

433
00:28:49,960 --> 00:28:51,360
of the composite sketch.

434
00:28:51,360 --> 00:28:56,180
I think somebody can recognize this person and put a name to who he is.

435
00:28:56,180 --> 00:29:03,500
So check it out on our Instagram or our website ColdandMissing.com where we also have transcripts.

436
00:29:03,500 --> 00:29:07,700
So if you or someone you love is hard of hearing, you can follow along that way.

437
00:29:07,700 --> 00:29:12,220
And if you have a minute, if you can rate and review us, give us a written review in

438
00:29:12,220 --> 00:29:14,300
Apple podcasts, that would be so great.

439
00:29:14,300 --> 00:29:17,860
We appreciate every single one so much.

440
00:29:17,860 --> 00:29:19,900
But that is all I have.

441
00:29:19,900 --> 00:29:24,740
Please tune in next week for part two of the Regina Mae Armstrong case.

442
00:29:24,740 --> 00:29:27,240
Thank you so much for listening to Cold and Missing.

443
00:29:27,240 --> 00:29:28,840
I'm your host, Allie.

444
00:29:28,840 --> 00:29:30,600
And I'm your cohost, Eli.

445
00:29:30,600 --> 00:29:32,580
Have a good week and stay safe, y'all.

446
00:29:32,580 --> 00:29:55,540
Stay safe, y'all.
