Cold And Missing: Roger Ellison

Seventeen-year-old Roger Ellison vanished without a trace from Cedaredge High School in 1981. A gifted skier with dreams of joining the U.S. national team, Roger had a bright future ahead—college acceptance, a scholarship, and plans for an upcoming race. But after a brief conversation at his locker, Roger was never seen again. What followed was a painful and frustrating journey for his family, who were met with indifference from law enforcement and a string of dead-end leads. Despite sporadic tips—including a suspicious teacher, a false sighting in Mississippi, and a chilling deathbed confession from a hunter who claimed to witness Roger’s murder—no trace of Roger has ever been found. Over four decades later, his case remains unsolved, leaving his loved ones and community with haunting questions and a desperate hope for answers. Join Ali and Eli as they go over this case.

00:00:29.230 --> 00:00:31.269
And this is Cold and Missing, where we cover
00:00:31.269 --> 00:00:34.759
cold cases and missing person cases. Hello everyone
00:00:34.759 --> 00:00:37.219
and welcome back to Cold and Missing. I'm your
00:00:37.219 --> 00:00:40.380
host, Ali. And I'm your co -host, Eli. Welcome
00:00:40.380 --> 00:00:43.060
back, everyone. Thank you so much for hanging
00:00:43.060 --> 00:00:45.600
with us. I'm so sorry we had to take last week
00:00:45.600 --> 00:00:48.719
off. As you've probably heard before, or maybe
00:00:48.719 --> 00:00:51.159
if you're new here, I'm somebody who gets chronic
00:00:51.159 --> 00:00:54.539
migraines and just had some really bad ones for
00:00:54.539 --> 00:00:56.340
the past month. Usually the weather changing
00:00:56.340 --> 00:01:00.200
kind of gets me. So I was... Down for the count.
00:01:00.359 --> 00:01:03.119
But I really appreciate your patience and for
00:01:03.119 --> 00:01:06.099
coming back to have another listen. Also, just
00:01:06.099 --> 00:01:08.219
want to say thank you. We did have some really
00:01:08.219 --> 00:01:11.659
wonderful and kind reviews come through on our
00:01:11.659 --> 00:01:15.920
website, on Apple, on Spotify. Just all these
00:01:15.920 --> 00:01:17.280
places, they were really coming through some
00:01:17.280 --> 00:01:22.140
really positive comments and reviews. And also,
00:01:22.200 --> 00:01:26.219
somebody was so kind and used the Buy Me a Coffee
00:01:26.219 --> 00:01:29.060
link on our website to buy Eli and I coffee.
00:01:29.280 --> 00:01:33.079
So thank you so much for that. We so greatly
00:01:33.079 --> 00:01:36.799
appreciate it. It's such an honor that someone
00:01:36.799 --> 00:01:39.079
would use their hard -earned dollars to help
00:01:39.079 --> 00:01:41.180
support this podcast. But that option is always
00:01:41.180 --> 00:01:43.900
there if you would also like to do that. Yeah,
00:01:43.959 --> 00:01:46.120
here at Cold and Missing, you know, we're a two
00:01:46.120 --> 00:01:50.540
-person team with Ali absolutely at the helm
00:01:50.540 --> 00:01:54.019
of our team. So, of course, you know, we never
00:01:54.019 --> 00:01:57.180
expect anything. So when it does happen, it's
00:01:57.180 --> 00:02:01.640
always wonderful and it is very helpful. Any
00:02:01.640 --> 00:02:05.780
coffee that's ever bought for us goes directly
00:02:05.780 --> 00:02:10.389
back into... making this podcast more accessible
00:02:10.389 --> 00:02:13.310
to everyone. That's always Allie's drive here
00:02:13.310 --> 00:02:17.110
on the technical end and in everything else she
00:02:17.110 --> 00:02:20.689
does. So thank you so much. Yeah, it just goes
00:02:20.689 --> 00:02:23.090
right back into the podcast, into researching,
00:02:23.349 --> 00:02:27.389
into trying to help these cases. So thank you.
00:02:27.449 --> 00:02:29.990
But with that, I think we should go ahead and
00:02:29.990 --> 00:02:33.530
get into this week's episode. That's right. We
00:02:33.530 --> 00:02:38.500
are on episode... It's 126 this week, and it
00:02:38.500 --> 00:02:42.759
is a missing persons case. And just as a quick
00:02:42.759 --> 00:02:45.599
content warning at the top, this case does involve
00:02:45.599 --> 00:02:48.159
a young person, and there are some brief mentions
00:02:48.159 --> 00:02:52.719
of death by suicide. Today, we are talking about
00:02:52.719 --> 00:02:56.780
the missing person case of Roger Ellison. And
00:02:56.780 --> 00:03:00.539
this takes place in February of 1981 in Cedar
00:03:00.539 --> 00:03:03.879
Edge, Colorado. But first, a little bit about
00:03:03.879 --> 00:03:09.000
Roger. Roger is 17 years old in 1981. He is a
00:03:09.000 --> 00:03:11.259
senior honor roll student at Cedar Edge High
00:03:11.259 --> 00:03:13.900
School, but was already looking forward to college.
00:03:14.539 --> 00:03:17.300
He'd been accepted to Western State College in
00:03:17.300 --> 00:03:20.639
Gunnison, Colorado, and he had won a skiing scholarship
00:03:20.639 --> 00:03:23.099
and had already put a deposit down and picked
00:03:23.099 --> 00:03:26.300
out his dorm room. Roger was a gifted skier.
00:03:26.659 --> 00:03:29.639
He had a dream of being on the U .S. national
00:03:29.639 --> 00:03:32.500
ski team, like his older sister had done a decade
00:03:32.500 --> 00:03:36.150
before him. He was the youngest of four siblings
00:03:36.150 --> 00:03:39.110
and the only one left at home. The rest of his
00:03:39.110 --> 00:03:41.449
siblings were older and married at this time.
00:03:42.110 --> 00:03:44.969
Right before the timeline picks up, Roger had
00:03:44.969 --> 00:03:47.750
competed in ski races in Telluride, Colorado.
00:03:48.430 --> 00:03:51.289
He had been disappointed by the outcome. He was
00:03:51.289 --> 00:03:54.409
hoping to secure a place on the U .S. ski B team,
00:03:54.629 --> 00:03:57.689
but had failed to. His parents say that he was
00:03:57.689 --> 00:03:59.650
disappointed but was already looking forward
00:03:59.650 --> 00:04:02.009
to the next race, which was coming up that weekend.
00:04:02.860 --> 00:04:07.199
And now, a timeline of events. Tuesday, February
00:04:07.199 --> 00:04:12.060
10th, 1981. Roger started the day very normally.
00:04:12.580 --> 00:04:14.740
He was eating breakfast in the kitchen with his
00:04:14.740 --> 00:04:17.620
mother when he noticed the weather outside. It
00:04:17.620 --> 00:04:20.160
looked like it was going to snow. He told his
00:04:20.160 --> 00:04:22.300
mom it was a good sign for the upcoming race
00:04:22.300 --> 00:04:26.079
in Aspen that weekend. Roger got ready and left
00:04:26.079 --> 00:04:29.519
for school. He had his yellow backpack and $3
00:04:29.519 --> 00:04:33.060
for lunch. He boarded the bus and headed to Cedar
00:04:33.060 --> 00:04:35.259
Edge High School, which was about six miles away
00:04:35.259 --> 00:04:38.600
from his home. Once at school, Roger caught up
00:04:38.600 --> 00:04:41.079
with his friend and locker mate at their shared
00:04:41.079 --> 00:04:46.779
locker, number 191. Roger shared the locker with
00:04:46.779 --> 00:04:49.819
his friend Mitch. Mitch was just about to slam
00:04:49.819 --> 00:04:51.879
the locker door shut when Roger called out for
00:04:51.879 --> 00:04:54.939
him to leave it open. Roger and Mitch chatted
00:04:54.939 --> 00:04:58.160
for a second. Roger was dropping off some books
00:04:58.160 --> 00:05:00.339
at the locker and grabbing some stuff that he
00:05:00.339 --> 00:05:03.220
needed for the day. Mitch headed off to class
00:05:03.220 --> 00:05:06.540
while Roger was finishing up at the locker. Roger
00:05:06.540 --> 00:05:09.860
told him he would catch up. This appears to be
00:05:09.860 --> 00:05:13.920
the last confirmed sighting of Roger. Roger never
00:05:13.920 --> 00:05:17.339
attended any classes that day. Even though Roger's
00:05:17.339 --> 00:05:20.819
attendance was perfect up until this point, his
00:05:20.819 --> 00:05:24.360
absence was not reported to his parents. Rogers'
00:05:24.480 --> 00:05:26.339
parents didn't know anything was wrong until
00:05:26.339 --> 00:05:29.439
he failed to get home from school that day. His
00:05:29.439 --> 00:05:32.279
mother, Evelyn, says, quote, When he didn't come
00:05:32.279 --> 00:05:35.259
on the bus, we thought he'd call. My husband
00:05:35.259 --> 00:05:38.199
and I waiting up all night. The next morning,
00:05:38.259 --> 00:05:41.240
we called the sheriff. He told us we had to wait
00:05:41.240 --> 00:05:44.899
48 hours before he could begin a search. We tried
00:05:44.899 --> 00:05:47.199
to explain that Rogers never done anything like
00:05:47.199 --> 00:05:50.120
that before, that he always called or left us
00:05:50.120 --> 00:05:53.250
a note on the kitchen table. This time, there
00:05:53.250 --> 00:05:56.850
was nothing. End quote. Like Evelyn says in her
00:05:56.850 --> 00:05:59.069
statement, when they tried to call police that
00:05:59.069 --> 00:06:02.290
next day, Wednesday, February 11th, when Roger
00:06:02.290 --> 00:06:05.689
failed to come home all night, the police didn't
00:06:05.689 --> 00:06:08.790
take it seriously. They assumed Roger was with
00:06:08.790 --> 00:06:12.149
friends or maybe with a girlfriend. His parents
00:06:12.149 --> 00:06:15.589
stressed that this was not the case. He had only
00:06:15.589 --> 00:06:17.949
taken his lunch money and the clothes he was
00:06:17.949 --> 00:06:22.019
wearing to school. His skis, his car, his motorcycle,
00:06:22.220 --> 00:06:25.540
and bank account were all untouched. Not wanting
00:06:25.540 --> 00:06:27.279
to wait for the police to start their search,
00:06:27.660 --> 00:06:30.480
Evelyn and her husband, Ernest, start searching.
00:06:31.500 --> 00:06:34.839
She says, quote, we drove down back roads, we
00:06:34.839 --> 00:06:37.959
combed the woods, we walked ditches. Gradually,
00:06:37.959 --> 00:06:41.240
it dawned on us that something terrible had happened
00:06:41.240 --> 00:06:45.100
to Roger and was happening to us. Suddenly, I
00:06:45.100 --> 00:06:47.980
was living every mother's nightmare, end quote.
00:06:48.960 --> 00:06:51.819
Over that weekend, Roger has been missing for
00:06:51.819 --> 00:06:54.759
four days. His parents hope that he'll show up
00:06:54.759 --> 00:06:56.879
to the race in Aspen since he had already paid
00:06:56.879 --> 00:07:00.120
the entry fee. But he didn't show up to the race.
00:07:01.300 --> 00:07:04.079
It doesn't appear that any major searches were
00:07:04.079 --> 00:07:06.779
done for Roger at this point in his disappearance.
00:07:07.600 --> 00:07:10.819
On February 25th, so Roger has been missing for
00:07:10.819 --> 00:07:14.180
15 days, and police believe that he's a runaway
00:07:14.180 --> 00:07:17.519
at this point. They believe that he had run away
00:07:17.519 --> 00:07:20.480
to a ski resort and found a job or was looking
00:07:20.480 --> 00:07:23.879
for a job. When asked about the length of time
00:07:23.879 --> 00:07:26.639
and the fact that he hadn't contacted his parents
00:07:26.639 --> 00:07:30.439
in 15 days, the police said that it wasn't unusual
00:07:30.439 --> 00:07:34.199
for teenagers to behave this way. His parents,
00:07:34.279 --> 00:07:36.620
however, are worried sick and think something
00:07:36.620 --> 00:07:39.959
terrible has happened to their son. On March
00:07:39.959 --> 00:07:43.600
11, 1981, Roger has been missing for a month
00:07:43.600 --> 00:07:47.819
at this point, and it's his 18th birthday. Police
00:07:47.819 --> 00:07:50.240
and his parents are hoping that he'll reach out
00:07:50.240 --> 00:07:53.339
now that he's officially an adult and let them
00:07:53.339 --> 00:07:55.920
know where he is. But the phone doesn't ring,
00:07:56.040 --> 00:08:01.319
and he never calls. In May of 1982, so it's been
00:08:01.319 --> 00:08:04.620
15 months since Roger vanished, and his father
00:08:04.620 --> 00:08:08.199
has also passed away as well. Rogers' family
00:08:08.199 --> 00:08:10.839
firmly believed that it was due to the heartbreak
00:08:10.839 --> 00:08:14.759
of his youngest son vanishing. At this point,
00:08:14.939 --> 00:08:18.660
Delty County Sheriff Detective Keith Weibel says,
00:08:18.800 --> 00:08:21.860
It looks like Roger Ellison just disappeared
00:08:21.860 --> 00:08:24.720
into thin air, but I know that can't happen.
00:08:25.160 --> 00:08:28.579
We've never had a single solid lead. We can't
00:08:28.579 --> 00:08:31.660
find a trace of where he went. This case has
00:08:31.660 --> 00:08:34.700
turned me into a blithering idiot. I've known
00:08:34.700 --> 00:08:37.080
the Ellison for years. They're a good family,
00:08:37.200 --> 00:08:40.580
and I gradually became convinced Roger wasn't
00:08:40.580 --> 00:08:44.220
a runaway. There was absolutely no evidence of
00:08:44.220 --> 00:08:48.019
a drug problem, no hint of mental illness, nothing
00:08:48.019 --> 00:08:50.360
to indicate Roger had been the slightest bit
00:08:50.360 --> 00:08:54.500
depressed." Investigators have asked the FBI
00:08:54.500 --> 00:08:57.340
to take a look at the case, but the FBI refuses
00:08:57.340 --> 00:09:00.779
since there is no evidence that Roger ever crossed
00:09:00.779 --> 00:09:03.679
state lines or that even a crime has been committed.
00:09:04.919 --> 00:09:07.220
However, a break in the case appears to come
00:09:07.220 --> 00:09:10.379
by the end of June of 1982, so just a few months
00:09:10.379 --> 00:09:13.279
later. Roger has been missing for a year and
00:09:13.279 --> 00:09:17.179
a half. And police say that Roger was seen alive
00:09:17.179 --> 00:09:21.679
as recently as April of 1982, so just a few months
00:09:21.679 --> 00:09:25.159
before this. Roger was seen working at a plant
00:09:25.159 --> 00:09:29.220
nursery in Mississippi up until April. A co -worker
00:09:29.220 --> 00:09:31.960
at the nursery reported it after seeing a story
00:09:31.960 --> 00:09:34.980
about Roger being missing. Delta County Sheriff
00:09:34.980 --> 00:09:38.120
says, quote, Ellison had been on the nursery
00:09:38.120 --> 00:09:41.539
property in April, but he left and nobody knew
00:09:41.539 --> 00:09:44.590
where he was going. We were close, but not close
00:09:44.590 --> 00:09:48.169
enough. If Roger reads anything about this, we're
00:09:48.169 --> 00:09:50.830
urging him to please contact his mother as soon
00:09:50.830 --> 00:09:54.330
as possible. End quote. Police do believe that
00:09:54.330 --> 00:09:57.049
this is a good lead and confirm that the person
00:09:57.049 --> 00:10:00.230
at the nursery was using Roger's name and social
00:10:00.230 --> 00:10:04.730
security number. However, years later, police
00:10:04.730 --> 00:10:08.649
will say that this sighting was a hoax. But this
00:10:08.649 --> 00:10:11.629
lead seems to stall the investigation for years,
00:10:11.669 --> 00:10:13.909
as it appears that Roger just didn't want to
00:10:13.909 --> 00:10:17.070
be found. But again, police say that this whole
00:10:17.070 --> 00:10:21.429
sighting was just a hoax. However, by April of
00:10:21.429 --> 00:10:25.029
1985, so it's been four years since Roger vanished,
00:10:25.250 --> 00:10:27.610
and his mother is still trying to get coverage
00:10:27.610 --> 00:10:30.690
for her son's case. She doesn't believe that
00:10:30.690 --> 00:10:32.870
he simply ran away or doesn't want to be found.
00:10:33.110 --> 00:10:35.690
She thinks something nefarious happened to him.
00:10:36.649 --> 00:10:40.409
She also confirms that even after all these years,
00:10:40.470 --> 00:10:43.710
his bank account, which had over $1 ,000 in it,
00:10:43.830 --> 00:10:48.590
was still sitting untouched. In 1989, so it's
00:10:48.590 --> 00:10:51.649
been over eight years since Roger vanished, and
00:10:51.649 --> 00:10:54.350
the new Delta County Sheriff Bill Blair says,
00:10:54.509 --> 00:10:58.149
quote, we have followed lead after lead after
00:10:58.149 --> 00:11:01.409
lead, but nothing has panned out. It's really
00:11:01.409 --> 00:11:03.269
tragic that we can't come up with something,
00:11:03.470 --> 00:11:07.659
end quote. There have been sightings of Roger
00:11:07.659 --> 00:11:10.220
over the years that have been reported to police.
00:11:10.899 --> 00:11:13.600
There were reports of Roger living in a commune
00:11:13.600 --> 00:11:16.740
in California. There was a sighting of him at
00:11:16.740 --> 00:11:19.960
a singles bar in Pittsburgh. And then a woman
00:11:19.960 --> 00:11:22.080
in Jacksonville, Florida, said that she had a
00:11:22.080 --> 00:11:24.799
child with a drifter that fit Roger's description.
00:11:25.600 --> 00:11:28.960
But none of these leads panned out. Investigators
00:11:28.960 --> 00:11:31.039
say that in each and every one of these instances,
00:11:31.259 --> 00:11:34.139
it was just someone who looked a lot like Roger.
00:11:34.909 --> 00:11:39.190
In March of 1994, so it's been 13 years since
00:11:39.190 --> 00:11:41.909
Roger disappeared, and police are taking another
00:11:41.909 --> 00:11:45.289
look at the case. They decide to re -interview
00:11:45.289 --> 00:11:47.710
classmates that were at school with Roger at
00:11:47.710 --> 00:11:51.269
the time. During this process, a tip surfaces.
00:11:52.190 --> 00:11:55.149
The tip is around a teacher that was at Cedar
00:11:55.149 --> 00:11:58.750
Edge High School when Roger vanished. Pash had
00:11:58.750 --> 00:12:01.570
taught psychology and coached wrestling at the
00:12:01.570 --> 00:12:05.500
high school. Pash was also known to Roger's family.
00:12:05.960 --> 00:12:09.200
He had stopped by the Ellison's house after Roger
00:12:09.200 --> 00:12:11.720
vanished to tell his parents that he had been
00:12:11.720 --> 00:12:15.179
counseling Roger at his home before he disappeared.
00:12:15.919 --> 00:12:19.059
He shared with his family that Roger was suicidal,
00:12:19.360 --> 00:12:21.919
but this didn't sound right to Roger's parents.
00:12:22.600 --> 00:12:24.960
They didn't know the counseling sessions were
00:12:24.960 --> 00:12:28.039
happening and were even more surprised as Roger
00:12:28.039 --> 00:12:30.840
had expressed that he didn't like Pash as a teacher.
00:12:31.820 --> 00:12:34.679
While it's unclear exactly what the tip was,
00:12:35.039 --> 00:12:39.000
it prompts a search of Pasha's former home. At
00:12:39.000 --> 00:12:42.000
this point, the home had been turned into a mortuary.
00:12:43.299 --> 00:12:46.259
Police bring in ground -penetrating radar to
00:12:46.259 --> 00:12:49.480
search the grounds. There are six spots that
00:12:49.480 --> 00:12:52.919
show an anomaly underground, four in the yard
00:12:52.919 --> 00:12:57.139
and two under the concrete garage. Police dig
00:12:57.139 --> 00:12:59.679
in the four spots in the yard and nothing is
00:12:59.679 --> 00:13:02.919
found. However, it doesn't appear that they ever
00:13:02.919 --> 00:13:07.519
dug under the garage, so those spots remain unchecked.
00:13:07.960 --> 00:13:12.299
In February of 1998, so it's been 17 years since
00:13:12.299 --> 00:13:15.919
Roger vanished, and Sheriff Blair asks for the
00:13:15.919 --> 00:13:19.360
public's help. He says, quote, someone out there
00:13:19.360 --> 00:13:22.419
knows what happened to him. We don't have a body,
00:13:22.460 --> 00:13:25.080
and even if we found one, we would have to have
00:13:25.080 --> 00:13:27.259
someone involved say, this is what happened.
00:13:28.049 --> 00:13:31.169
Either he went to some house close by or someone
00:13:31.169 --> 00:13:33.509
was there to meet him and pick him up in a car.
00:13:33.870 --> 00:13:36.809
I just don't know what happened to him, end quote.
00:13:37.769 --> 00:13:40.309
During this plea for information, an English
00:13:40.309 --> 00:13:43.289
teacher that Roger had mentioned this about his
00:13:43.289 --> 00:13:46.690
time at school. She said, quote, he used to tell
00:13:46.690 --> 00:13:49.049
me stories that the kids would chase him and
00:13:49.049 --> 00:13:51.889
he would have to hide on rooftops. I don't think
00:13:51.889 --> 00:13:56.289
he fit in all that well, end quote. Later in
00:13:56.289 --> 00:14:00.659
1998, In September, a dying man comes forward,
00:14:01.000 --> 00:14:03.539
saying that he wanted to clear his conscience
00:14:03.539 --> 00:14:07.879
and that he knew what happened to Roger. Police
00:14:07.879 --> 00:14:28.649
report that the man and his friend, quote, Supposedly,
00:14:28.649 --> 00:14:33.029
it was over a bad cocaine deal. Ellison had absconded
00:14:33.029 --> 00:14:35.870
with the money and given it to his friends, end
00:14:35.870 --> 00:14:40.110
quote. The two men walked away and a few minutes
00:14:40.110 --> 00:14:44.149
later heard two gunshots. The two men agreed
00:14:44.149 --> 00:14:47.750
to never talk about it and forget about it until
00:14:47.750 --> 00:14:49.629
one of them wanted to clear their conscience.
00:14:50.509 --> 00:14:54.370
The Hunter friend confirmed the story. They both
00:14:54.370 --> 00:14:57.940
were polygraphed and passed. They also both picked
00:14:57.940 --> 00:15:00.679
a picture of Roger out of a lineup saying that
00:15:00.679 --> 00:15:04.539
he was the young man being restrained. This confession
00:15:04.539 --> 00:15:07.879
prompts a huge police search in the area that
00:15:07.879 --> 00:15:11.059
the hunters pointed out. The Delta County Sheriff,
00:15:11.440 --> 00:15:16.360
CBI, and the FBI all help search the area. They
00:15:16.360 --> 00:15:19.000
even bring in students from an anthropology department
00:15:19.000 --> 00:15:21.860
in case remains are found to help in the process
00:15:21.860 --> 00:15:27.279
of documenting and recovering. No remains were
00:15:27.279 --> 00:15:30.179
found, and this was really the last update we
00:15:30.179 --> 00:15:33.080
get on Roger's case and the last big movement
00:15:33.080 --> 00:15:36.779
on it that I could find. Over the years, Roger's
00:15:36.779 --> 00:15:39.320
case is brought up in papers as part of cold
00:15:39.320 --> 00:15:43.779
cases, but there's no new leads, no new evidence,
00:15:43.919 --> 00:15:47.720
no new information on his case. So with that,
00:15:47.759 --> 00:15:50.139
if you know anything about the disappearance
00:15:50.139 --> 00:15:55.039
of Roger Ellison in February of 1981, or his
00:15:55.039 --> 00:15:58.039
whereabouts today, please call the Delta County
00:15:58.039 --> 00:16:07.019
Sheriff's Office at 970 -874 -2000. So that is
00:16:07.019 --> 00:16:10.440
the missing person case of Roger Ellison. This
00:16:10.440 --> 00:16:13.360
is one of those cases where, as I was listening
00:16:13.360 --> 00:16:17.559
to the timeline, I kept getting up because I
00:16:17.559 --> 00:16:20.480
wanted to walk back here to ask you questions
00:16:20.480 --> 00:16:23.759
as you were talking about the timeline. And I
00:16:23.759 --> 00:16:26.740
think I may have mentioned this last episode
00:16:26.740 --> 00:16:32.399
when we were covering a case. Sometimes I can't
00:16:32.399 --> 00:16:37.580
write down the questions fast enough, and that's
00:16:37.580 --> 00:16:41.460
definitely the case here for Roger. Just first
00:16:41.460 --> 00:16:48.440
off, I guess there's no real good way to kick
00:16:48.440 --> 00:16:53.399
off rediscussing the timeline, but... I can't
00:16:53.399 --> 00:16:59.860
not mention how law enforcement bungled this,
00:17:00.139 --> 00:17:06.240
in my opinion. I don'tâI never understand the
00:17:06.240 --> 00:17:10.839
reaction of, wait, of wait, wait, wait, because
00:17:10.839 --> 00:17:15.160
that always seems to be where the case goes wrong
00:17:15.160 --> 00:17:18.799
and goes south for a lot of these victims, and
00:17:18.799 --> 00:17:22.740
it'sâ It's excruciating to listen to because
00:17:22.740 --> 00:17:26.960
some of the things that they are quoted saying,
00:17:27.339 --> 00:17:32.420
like it was painful to listen to someone in law
00:17:32.420 --> 00:17:37.380
enforcement say, it gradually came to me that
00:17:37.380 --> 00:17:41.880
this is what's happening is what the parents
00:17:41.880 --> 00:17:46.299
told us to begin with. And it's not. necessarily
00:17:46.299 --> 00:17:49.740
an admission, but almost like a revelation. And
00:17:49.740 --> 00:17:52.660
there's no time for you to have a revelation
00:17:52.660 --> 00:17:56.299
about what you believe is happening to someone.
00:17:57.319 --> 00:18:02.779
I know I sound passionate, but I'm angry on behalf
00:18:02.779 --> 00:18:05.599
of this family. And now a lot of time has passed
00:18:05.599 --> 00:18:10.980
and some people are gone. And as a listener,
00:18:11.119 --> 00:18:14.170
it's just really difficult to digest that. To
00:18:14.170 --> 00:18:17.490
digest that information, it's so unfair. Yeah,
00:18:17.509 --> 00:18:20.309
it's very difficult to imagine in this day and
00:18:20.309 --> 00:18:25.009
age telling parents of a senior who showed up
00:18:25.009 --> 00:18:27.990
to school but never attended any classes that
00:18:27.990 --> 00:18:30.329
they need to wait 48 hours before they can start
00:18:30.329 --> 00:18:33.890
searching for him. Like, I just imagine that
00:18:33.890 --> 00:18:36.990
story breaking today and it's like that whole
00:18:36.990 --> 00:18:39.869
town would be turned upside down searching for
00:18:39.869 --> 00:18:46.190
him. We say that sitting in 2025 and law enforcement
00:18:46.190 --> 00:18:48.549
has learned a lot over the years. But I agree
00:18:48.549 --> 00:18:51.369
with you. It's so maddening and frustrating that
00:18:51.369 --> 00:18:54.509
these protocols, these things were put in place,
00:18:54.630 --> 00:18:58.430
especially for children. Just there's I feel
00:18:58.430 --> 00:19:00.609
like there's no excuse to not know where a child
00:19:00.609 --> 00:19:03.049
is. So if we don't know where a child is, everybody
00:19:03.049 --> 00:19:06.509
should be looking for them. Yeah. Again, to me
00:19:06.509 --> 00:19:10.250
and obviously to you, it's an all hands on deck.
00:19:10.759 --> 00:19:13.279
situation and the fact that those two parents
00:19:13.279 --> 00:19:18.099
began the search on their own like I can barely
00:19:18.099 --> 00:19:21.740
take saying that out loud that is horrifying
00:19:21.740 --> 00:19:28.180
to feel I mean I don't know the feeling but to
00:19:28.180 --> 00:19:31.019
know that they were just completely alone at
00:19:31.019 --> 00:19:34.779
the beginning and you know his father passing
00:19:34.779 --> 00:19:40.509
not that long after like This family was dealt
00:19:40.509 --> 00:19:43.829
a lot and given next to nothing to deal with
00:19:43.829 --> 00:19:48.250
it. Yeah. You know, the resources in this case
00:19:48.250 --> 00:19:50.990
just felt like it all came way too late. Just,
00:19:50.990 --> 00:19:56.210
you know, they missed, you know, that period
00:19:56.210 --> 00:19:58.630
of time where the most critical information was
00:19:58.630 --> 00:20:01.609
going to be. It was all missed. And that's really
00:20:01.609 --> 00:20:05.890
unfortunate for Roger and for his family to try
00:20:05.890 --> 00:20:11.500
to have to deal with that. Now, because the storyline
00:20:11.500 --> 00:20:15.940
that you so beautifully put together for us involves
00:20:15.940 --> 00:20:20.539
a lot of speculative nature on both law enforcement
00:20:20.539 --> 00:20:25.619
and witnesses and even family of what they think
00:20:25.619 --> 00:20:30.539
happened, I am kind of operating from asking
00:20:30.539 --> 00:20:34.259
my questions because of those speculations. I
00:20:34.259 --> 00:20:37.779
think my mind just naturally... followed the
00:20:37.779 --> 00:20:42.099
speculative pathway but from multiple angles
00:20:42.099 --> 00:20:45.640
so I'm going to try to balance them out as I
00:20:45.640 --> 00:20:49.619
ask these questions. My first one being and I
00:20:49.619 --> 00:20:52.519
have my own answer for this but what would be
00:20:52.519 --> 00:20:55.019
his motive for running away? I was curious to
00:20:55.019 --> 00:20:57.220
know what you thought especially because that
00:20:57.220 --> 00:20:59.000
was something that was tossed around so much
00:20:59.000 --> 00:21:02.099
between law enforcement that that was the speculation
00:21:02.099 --> 00:21:05.200
that he left because he was running away. Yeah,
00:21:05.240 --> 00:21:08.019
this is one where it's like, I don't really see
00:21:08.019 --> 00:21:10.599
him running away at all. You know, like, I get
00:21:10.599 --> 00:21:12.960
that he, you know, was kind of bummed at his
00:21:12.960 --> 00:21:17.299
performance on the race the weekend before. But,
00:21:17.339 --> 00:21:19.460
you know, he was getting ready to go to college,
00:21:19.619 --> 00:21:21.819
had put down that down payment on the dorm room,
00:21:21.960 --> 00:21:25.240
was looking forward to the race this weekend.
00:21:25.900 --> 00:21:29.019
And then, you know, he left everything that he
00:21:29.019 --> 00:21:31.519
would kind of need if he was running away. He
00:21:31.519 --> 00:21:34.710
left his car. He left his motorcycle, he left
00:21:34.710 --> 00:21:37.970
his skis, which were pretty important to him,
00:21:38.049 --> 00:21:42.509
and left all his money. So I don't see him running
00:21:42.509 --> 00:21:46.150
away from those actions alone and what was going
00:21:46.150 --> 00:21:49.069
on around his life. It doesn't seem like a runaway.
00:21:49.829 --> 00:21:55.170
This is where I feel, I think, wishy -washy.
00:21:55.170 --> 00:21:58.109
I guess that's the best way to say it, about
00:21:58.109 --> 00:22:01.150
being speculative, because... I definitely don't
00:22:01.150 --> 00:22:05.789
want to add insult to injury, but when I asked
00:22:05.789 --> 00:22:07.950
myself this question, what would be his motive
00:22:07.950 --> 00:22:14.829
for running away, my general answer was kids
00:22:14.829 --> 00:22:18.250
can hide a lot. They can hide a lot from their
00:22:18.250 --> 00:22:20.430
parents. They can hide a lot from their teachers.
00:22:20.529 --> 00:22:25.329
They can hide a lot from their friends. I think
00:22:25.329 --> 00:22:28.549
it's possible that he has a motive that we don't
00:22:28.549 --> 00:22:33.019
even know about. And I think because there are
00:22:33.019 --> 00:22:35.779
so few details in this case, it's absolutely
00:22:35.779 --> 00:22:39.700
possible that there is a motive. No, I think
00:22:39.700 --> 00:22:41.440
that's a really important point is that like
00:22:41.440 --> 00:22:45.740
truly we don't know anything. You know, at this
00:22:45.740 --> 00:22:49.160
point, police have like kind of labeled this
00:22:49.160 --> 00:22:55.240
as foul play is suspected. I think that while
00:22:55.240 --> 00:22:58.359
not impossible, I think it would have been. harder
00:22:58.359 --> 00:23:03.119
for a 17 year old to vanish without a trace without
00:23:03.119 --> 00:23:07.579
taking some money taking some clothes like taking
00:23:07.579 --> 00:23:11.920
some things to just vanish kind of in a very
00:23:11.920 --> 00:23:14.779
short amount of time right before classes start
00:23:14.779 --> 00:23:22.460
not impossible of course but does feel slim in
00:23:22.460 --> 00:23:24.839
this case but I do agree with your point about
00:23:25.640 --> 00:23:28.900
hiding things because it took years and years
00:23:28.900 --> 00:23:32.240
for that english teacher to kind of come out
00:23:32.240 --> 00:23:35.720
and say like he was bullied at school that was
00:23:35.720 --> 00:23:40.240
never mentioned before and i thought that that
00:23:40.240 --> 00:23:43.099
could have been you know again this is all speculative
00:23:43.099 --> 00:23:46.160
but it's like well that's was that ever looked
00:23:46.160 --> 00:23:49.119
at like could it have been bullies in the school
00:23:49.119 --> 00:23:51.859
and like something got out of hand like could
00:23:51.859 --> 00:23:55.829
that have happened I think what my mind is trying
00:23:55.829 --> 00:24:00.589
to do is draw correlations together and knowing,
00:24:00.730 --> 00:24:03.430
as we moved around in the timeline and found
00:24:03.430 --> 00:24:08.589
out much later, that possibly he was facing mental
00:24:08.589 --> 00:24:13.170
health issues and that maybe he was being bullied
00:24:13.170 --> 00:24:17.410
in school. If he was trying to disappear himself,
00:24:17.809 --> 00:24:25.690
those seem like more... probable motives as to
00:24:25.690 --> 00:24:31.109
why for me I will say this though the the tip
00:24:31.109 --> 00:24:33.849
about the teacher and like the counseling and
00:24:33.849 --> 00:24:37.269
stuff like that I had the impression like based
00:24:37.269 --> 00:24:40.430
off of the reporting at the time that this was
00:24:40.430 --> 00:24:42.930
like kind of nefarious and suspicious that it
00:24:42.930 --> 00:24:47.069
was like strange that this teacher was doing
00:24:47.069 --> 00:24:49.109
this counseling like the parents didn't have
00:24:49.109 --> 00:24:53.859
any prior knowledge that their son was being
00:24:53.859 --> 00:25:01.259
like counseled by a psychology teacher that Roger
00:25:01.259 --> 00:25:03.319
was even going to his house for this because
00:25:03.319 --> 00:25:05.039
Roger had said that he didn't really like this
00:25:05.039 --> 00:25:07.339
teacher so all of that was strange to the family
00:25:07.339 --> 00:25:11.799
so I had the feeling that this teacher that all
00:25:11.799 --> 00:25:16.440
that information was like very suspicious I also
00:25:16.440 --> 00:25:18.799
had written down it was the next thing that I
00:25:18.799 --> 00:25:23.839
was going to get to was that This child was essentially
00:25:23.839 --> 00:25:28.599
having an unknown relationship to his parents
00:25:28.599 --> 00:25:33.859
with another adult. I think that that will always
00:25:33.859 --> 00:25:39.259
rise a red flag in my mind. And knowing that
00:25:39.259 --> 00:25:46.180
there was ground -penetrating radar in both the
00:25:46.180 --> 00:25:50.839
yard, which was dug up, and the... garage which
00:25:50.839 --> 00:25:54.599
was not I am very interested to know what is
00:25:54.599 --> 00:25:57.500
under that cement but I also know you know working
00:25:57.500 --> 00:26:00.259
in maintenance and just like general construction
00:26:00.259 --> 00:26:04.279
I know how expensive it is to pulverize cement
00:26:04.279 --> 00:26:06.500
and dig beneath it because there's a lot of stuff
00:26:06.500 --> 00:26:09.059
that you have to dig through and rip through
00:26:09.059 --> 00:26:13.720
and I guess what I'm saying is I'm also I also
00:26:13.720 --> 00:26:17.279
have eyes on this teacher as well along with
00:26:17.279 --> 00:26:21.200
every other correlation my brain has tried to
00:26:21.200 --> 00:26:25.319
string up in this case. Yeah, I would also be
00:26:25.319 --> 00:26:28.740
interested to know, you know, in a perfect world
00:26:28.740 --> 00:26:32.640
where we could just throw money at this and make
00:26:32.640 --> 00:26:35.740
it happen. I would love to know just if there's
00:26:35.740 --> 00:26:40.240
anything of value underneath the garage, especially
00:26:40.240 --> 00:26:43.779
in Roger's case. I would also be interested to
00:26:43.779 --> 00:26:48.099
know just if police ever had the chance to talk
00:26:48.099 --> 00:26:50.920
to that teacher and interview him and interrogate
00:26:50.920 --> 00:26:53.579
him. Because from my understanding, it didn't
00:26:53.579 --> 00:26:57.500
seem like they had been able to. That teacher
00:26:57.500 --> 00:27:00.640
had moved out of state at that point when this
00:27:00.640 --> 00:27:02.420
tip kind of surfaced and they started digging
00:27:02.420 --> 00:27:06.480
in what was his old yard. So it doesn't seem
00:27:06.480 --> 00:27:08.599
like they ever talked to him. So I would be interested
00:27:08.599 --> 00:27:12.390
just to know if. that happened and how police
00:27:12.390 --> 00:27:16.910
felt after that interview. Yeah, especially because
00:27:16.910 --> 00:27:19.950
there's such little information about it, but
00:27:19.950 --> 00:27:24.509
it seems like a poignant and important relationship
00:27:24.509 --> 00:27:28.990
to take note of and investigate in. Again, to
00:27:28.990 --> 00:27:33.049
echo you, I'd love to know more information about
00:27:33.049 --> 00:27:37.250
if there was any investigation done on this person.
00:27:38.380 --> 00:27:41.380
Well, and also to validate his story, like, it's
00:27:41.380 --> 00:27:45.660
strange that after Roger disappeared, he, I don't
00:27:45.660 --> 00:27:47.500
want to say inserted himself into the investigation,
00:27:47.740 --> 00:27:50.160
but, like, came to the parents and said, like,
00:27:50.299 --> 00:27:53.420
you know, Roger was depressed. He was suicidal.
00:27:53.720 --> 00:27:58.559
I was counseling him. Like, you know, just to
00:27:58.559 --> 00:28:00.920
validate all that, like, was that true? Was this
00:28:00.920 --> 00:28:04.829
just, like, a... that this teacher maybe tried
00:28:04.829 --> 00:28:06.750
to tell the parents to make them feel bad. You
00:28:06.750 --> 00:28:10.089
know, like, there's a lot of different ways to
00:28:10.089 --> 00:28:13.589
think about it. So I would just want to know,
00:28:13.630 --> 00:28:16.670
like, what parts of that story was true? Was
00:28:16.670 --> 00:28:19.109
any of it true? Like, what was the reason for
00:28:19.109 --> 00:28:23.509
all this? Yeah, and you say this to me all the
00:28:23.509 --> 00:28:26.490
time when you and I are just discussing true
00:28:26.490 --> 00:28:30.819
crime and true crime cases. When people start
00:28:30.819 --> 00:28:35.039
to behave oddly around an event like this, around
00:28:35.039 --> 00:28:39.400
a person going missing, take note of that behavior.
00:28:39.680 --> 00:28:42.880
And to me, a teacher stopping by out of the blue,
00:28:43.059 --> 00:28:46.779
that's something to take note of. I had another
00:28:46.779 --> 00:28:49.680
question to ask you, and this is more just about
00:28:49.680 --> 00:28:52.619
Roger. I wanted to know what you thought of the
00:28:52.619 --> 00:28:56.109
untouched bank account. That's one thing that
00:28:56.109 --> 00:28:58.230
I come back to again and again that makes me
00:28:58.230 --> 00:29:03.910
think that maybe Roger didn't leave voluntarily.
00:29:04.529 --> 00:29:07.049
From my understanding, this was money that he
00:29:07.049 --> 00:29:10.710
had been saving up for and that he had won through
00:29:10.710 --> 00:29:14.430
ski racing. As I was researching Roger for years,
00:29:14.569 --> 00:29:18.170
I just saw him being awarded these skiing competition
00:29:18.170 --> 00:29:22.250
titles. I don't know a lot about skiing, to be
00:29:22.250 --> 00:29:25.960
honest. He was winning a lot and being mentioned
00:29:25.960 --> 00:29:31.119
in the paper a lot for it. So if somebody, you
00:29:31.119 --> 00:29:33.880
know, just a month before their 18th birthday
00:29:33.880 --> 00:29:37.319
is going to take off, I think they would just
00:29:37.319 --> 00:29:39.460
take a little bit of money with them, especially,
00:29:39.640 --> 00:29:42.220
you know, 1981. Like there's no debit cards.
00:29:42.460 --> 00:29:48.299
Like people would write checks. But he wasn't
00:29:48.299 --> 00:29:50.039
even doing that. You know, none of that money
00:29:50.039 --> 00:29:53.359
was being accessed. I think he would have taken
00:29:53.359 --> 00:29:57.039
more than just the $3 for lunch and then the
00:29:57.039 --> 00:29:58.960
clothes on his back. There would have been some
00:29:58.960 --> 00:30:02.640
more outfits missed, just something else. It
00:30:02.640 --> 00:30:05.920
would be really hard for him to just leave. The
00:30:05.920 --> 00:30:08.079
reason I brought up the bank account is because
00:30:08.079 --> 00:30:13.039
that is the one, honestly, fact about this case
00:30:13.039 --> 00:30:19.380
that ties me to the reality that he didn't leave
00:30:19.380 --> 00:30:22.829
willingly. As many correlations I can draw and
00:30:22.829 --> 00:30:26.430
speculation I can come up with, that untouched
00:30:26.430 --> 00:30:31.190
bank account stands out to me. And I thought
00:30:31.190 --> 00:30:34.890
that it would for you too as well. And it seems
00:30:34.890 --> 00:30:38.089
like we have the same thought about this is that
00:30:38.089 --> 00:30:42.829
he would have taken just a sliver of something
00:30:42.829 --> 00:30:47.430
else. And, you know, another like fact in this
00:30:47.430 --> 00:30:50.750
case that I keep coming back to is just. If it
00:30:50.750 --> 00:30:53.190
wasn't Roger, then who was the boy in the woods
00:30:53.190 --> 00:30:56.829
that these hunters stumbled upon being restrained?
00:30:56.910 --> 00:30:59.750
Like, what was that situation? Because if it's
00:30:59.750 --> 00:31:03.690
not Roger, then it's somebody else. So who is
00:31:03.690 --> 00:31:09.450
it? And, you know, just because nothing was found
00:31:09.450 --> 00:31:13.970
in that area, like, you know, we've seen bodies
00:31:13.970 --> 00:31:16.769
be moved before from one spot to another. Like,
00:31:16.809 --> 00:31:22.140
that can happen. What is that story? What do
00:31:22.140 --> 00:31:27.240
we know? What do we not know? These two people
00:31:27.240 --> 00:31:31.039
kind of told the same story, saw the same thing,
00:31:31.160 --> 00:31:33.259
backed each other up, passed the polygraph. So
00:31:33.259 --> 00:31:35.700
something happened. And if it wasn't related
00:31:35.700 --> 00:31:38.099
to Roger, it was related to somebody else. So
00:31:38.099 --> 00:31:42.839
I think we need some answers there. Yeah, that
00:31:42.839 --> 00:31:45.700
revelation in this timeline kind of came out
00:31:45.700 --> 00:31:48.500
of left field for me. I wasn't expecting it.
00:31:48.910 --> 00:31:53.670
At all. But I also, I left a little bit of room
00:31:53.670 --> 00:31:57.970
in me to know that like both of those men could
00:31:57.970 --> 00:32:01.470
have 100 % believed that it was Roger that they
00:32:01.470 --> 00:32:04.829
saw. So therefore, they would pass that polygraph
00:32:04.829 --> 00:32:09.569
test. Yeah, I just, if it wasn't Roger, then
00:32:09.569 --> 00:32:12.690
who was it? In this scenario, I don't want to
00:32:12.690 --> 00:32:15.589
believe that it was him because I know what the
00:32:15.589 --> 00:32:18.940
end result is. I don't know what to make of that
00:32:18.940 --> 00:32:20.920
deathbed confession. I think it's fascinating.
00:32:21.200 --> 00:32:25.259
I think it's completely possible that because
00:32:25.259 --> 00:32:29.299
of what we said earlier about how kids can hide
00:32:29.299 --> 00:32:32.279
things and teenagers do all the time, that it's
00:32:32.279 --> 00:32:34.319
possible that this was absolutely happening in
00:32:34.319 --> 00:32:36.680
the woods and these men stumbled upon that and
00:32:36.680 --> 00:32:39.279
then his body was moved and never recovered.
00:32:40.599 --> 00:32:47.410
Yeah, I don't know. This case is tough. I get
00:32:47.410 --> 00:32:49.950
why somebody would want to maybe get that off
00:32:49.950 --> 00:32:54.549
their chest towards the end of their life. I
00:32:54.549 --> 00:32:58.369
know we could speculate and try to draw conclusions
00:32:58.369 --> 00:33:03.329
for hours. We do this when we're not on the mic.
00:33:03.529 --> 00:33:08.089
So I don't think there's any great way to wrap
00:33:08.089 --> 00:33:10.789
up discussing this case. I'm just very grateful
00:33:10.789 --> 00:33:15.730
that you brought it to... My attention, our attention,
00:33:15.950 --> 00:33:20.250
and I'm hoping that, you know, people who engage
00:33:20.250 --> 00:33:23.549
with true crime do their thing and investigate
00:33:23.549 --> 00:33:27.910
more and we get to hear more about just who Roger
00:33:27.910 --> 00:33:33.609
was and maybe a few more of those details will
00:33:33.609 --> 00:33:36.609
trickle in and fill in the gaps here. Somebody
00:33:36.609 --> 00:33:40.259
absolutely knows what happened to Roger. That
00:33:40.259 --> 00:33:43.299
much I do know. I think there's more information.
00:33:43.440 --> 00:33:45.599
I think maybe somebody he went to school with.
00:33:46.200 --> 00:33:49.579
Somebody knows something that they haven't come
00:33:49.579 --> 00:33:53.539
forward with yet. Roger's siblings, you know,
00:33:53.559 --> 00:33:56.299
still want answers for him. And, you know, I
00:33:56.299 --> 00:33:58.839
hope someday that we're able to get those answers
00:33:58.839 --> 00:34:02.599
and we're able to bring Roger home. However that
00:34:02.599 --> 00:34:05.759
is, we're able to get him home. So again, if
00:34:05.759 --> 00:34:07.779
you know anything about the disappearance of
00:34:07.779 --> 00:34:12.059
Roger Ellison in February of 1981 or his whereabouts
00:34:12.059 --> 00:34:15.000
today, please call the Delta County Sheriff's
00:34:15.000 --> 00:34:24.099
Office at 970 -874 -2000. As always, Eli will
00:34:24.099 --> 00:34:27.719
have graphics on our Instagram for you. It will
00:34:27.719 --> 00:34:30.280
show pictures of Roger and also some age progress
00:34:30.280 --> 00:34:32.900
photos. So what he would have looked like towards
00:34:32.900 --> 00:34:35.719
his later 20s and then into his 40s as well.
00:34:35.739 --> 00:34:38.500
So please take a look and share in your communities,
00:34:38.739 --> 00:34:41.059
share in your stories. Just get Roger's face,
00:34:41.199 --> 00:34:43.659
get his case out there so other people know about
00:34:43.659 --> 00:34:46.659
him and are talking about him. And like I mentioned
00:34:46.659 --> 00:34:48.639
at the top, thank you so much to everyone who
00:34:48.639 --> 00:34:51.300
