Cold and Missing

On May 16, 2003, a shocking crime unfolded at Blue Ridge Savings Bank in Greer, South Carolina. Sylvia Holtzclaw, the head teller known for her dedication to her community, was working a full day due to a coworker’s illness. Tragically, she, along with Dr. James ‘Eb’ Barnes and his wife Maggie Barnes, were murdered during a robbery. Despite the presence of a silent alarm and security footage, the perpetrator - or perpetrators- managed to escape, leaving the police and FBI with few clues. A red car captured on a nearby gas station's camera and an array of leads failed to resolve the case. Over time, various suspects came under scrutiny, but none were definitively linked to the crime. Join Ali and Eli as they go through the case.

8
00:00:34,640 --> 00:00:36,720
Hello and welcome back to Cold and Missing.

9
00:00:36,720 --> 00:00:38,240
I'm Ali.

10
00:00:38,240 --> 00:00:39,240
And I'm Eli.

11
00:00:39,240 --> 00:00:40,920
Welcome back, everyone.

12
00:00:40,920 --> 00:00:43,080
As always, a quick shout out at the top.

13
00:00:43,080 --> 00:00:46,880
Again, we've had lots of very kind reviews coming in this week.

14
00:00:46,880 --> 00:00:52,240
It feels like every time I go to the Apple podcast page, we have another new review,

15
00:00:52,240 --> 00:00:53,820
which is awesome.

16
00:00:53,820 --> 00:00:55,880
Thank you so much for doing that.

17
00:00:55,880 --> 00:00:57,440
And we appreciate it so much.

18
00:00:57,440 --> 00:01:01,680
Well, we are on episode 101 this week.

19
00:01:01,680 --> 00:01:03,680
So do you want to just get to it?

20
00:01:03,680 --> 00:01:06,600
Yeah, let's go ahead and get into it.

21
00:01:06,600 --> 00:01:11,640
And just as a quick content warning at the top, there is a brief mention of death by

22
00:01:11,640 --> 00:01:12,640
suicide.

23
00:01:12,640 --> 00:01:18,080
Today, we're going to be talking about the Blue Ridge Savings Bank murders.

24
00:01:18,080 --> 00:01:23,840
And this takes place May 16, 2003, in Greer, South Carolina.

25
00:01:23,840 --> 00:01:27,520
But first, a little bit about the victims.

26
00:01:27,520 --> 00:01:29,440
Sylvia Holtzclaw.

27
00:01:29,440 --> 00:01:33,160
Sylvia is 56 years old in 2003.

28
00:01:33,160 --> 00:01:36,840
Sylvia was a staple of the Greer community.

29
00:01:36,840 --> 00:01:42,540
Those that loved her and knew her said she could talk to anyone for at least 30 minutes.

30
00:01:42,540 --> 00:01:45,980
She had been a single mother and had two adult sons.

31
00:01:45,980 --> 00:01:50,600
She was a fixture of her church and young folks in the youth group seemed to flock to

32
00:01:50,600 --> 00:01:51,600
her.

33
00:01:51,600 --> 00:01:56,360
She was always working in the background, making sure things got done, cooking for potlucks

34
00:01:56,360 --> 00:02:00,080
and fundraisers or showing up with a surprise meal.

35
00:02:00,080 --> 00:02:02,600
She was also trustworthy.

36
00:02:02,600 --> 00:02:07,720
All of these characteristics combined made her a perfect bank teller.

37
00:02:07,720 --> 00:02:10,940
In fact, she was the lead bank teller.

38
00:02:10,940 --> 00:02:16,080
She was able to talk to anyone and had the knowhow to handle delicate situations.

39
00:02:16,080 --> 00:02:19,400
Dr. James Eb Barnes.

40
00:02:19,400 --> 00:02:24,160
Dr. Barnes went by his nickname, Eb, E-B.

41
00:02:24,160 --> 00:02:30,120
He was 60 years old in 2003 and was a physics professor at the University of South Carolina

42
00:02:30,120 --> 00:02:31,600
Upstate.

43
00:02:31,600 --> 00:02:35,960
Not only was he a professor, but he was also the director of programs on campus, so he

44
00:02:35,960 --> 00:02:39,480
was well known by both staff and students.

45
00:02:39,480 --> 00:02:43,900
They described him as an amazing teacher and a fair administrator.

46
00:02:43,900 --> 00:02:48,680
During the winter graduation, he was known to wear a Santa Claus hat with his robes.

47
00:02:48,680 --> 00:02:52,120
She had quite the collection of Santa Claus hats.

48
00:02:52,120 --> 00:02:57,160
He had been married to his wife, Maggie Barnes, for 38 years.

49
00:02:57,160 --> 00:03:01,220
Maggie Barnes was 58 years old in 2003.

50
00:03:01,220 --> 00:03:05,560
With Eb, the two of them had raised three children who were all adults.

51
00:03:05,560 --> 00:03:07,560
Maggie was an artist.

52
00:03:07,560 --> 00:03:13,360
She got into weaving and making tapestries when she found a flax spinning wheel in the

53
00:03:13,360 --> 00:03:18,000
attic of her great-grandparents' farmhouse in Alabama.

54
00:03:18,000 --> 00:03:23,760
Her and Eb would also host talks on historical clothing and weaving techniques.

55
00:03:23,760 --> 00:03:28,360
Many of the tapestries she wove hung in buildings around campus.

56
00:03:28,360 --> 00:03:32,680
She worked for the National Beta Club and loved working with high schoolers and volunteering

57
00:03:32,680 --> 00:03:34,920
her time at church.

58
00:03:34,920 --> 00:03:38,920
All in all, these three were amazing people.

59
00:03:38,920 --> 00:03:43,520
Now before we get into the timeline, I just want to give a quick rundown of the Blue Ridge

60
00:03:43,520 --> 00:03:45,200
Savings Bank.

61
00:03:45,200 --> 00:03:47,400
This was a new bank in the area.

62
00:03:47,400 --> 00:03:50,760
It had only opened in the last 18 months.

63
00:03:50,760 --> 00:03:57,060
It was right off of Interstate 85 at the end of a dead-end road, East Frontage Road.

64
00:03:57,060 --> 00:04:00,960
The road actually ended at the bank at that time.

65
00:04:00,960 --> 00:04:05,100
The bank was also not a typical brick and mortar building.

66
00:04:05,100 --> 00:04:09,000
It was a double-wide trailer that had been turned into a bank.

67
00:04:09,000 --> 00:04:12,880
This bank was also not a place where you would do your day-to-day banking.

68
00:04:12,880 --> 00:04:19,700
It was more of a bank where you would go for loans or mortgages or to open a CD account.

69
00:04:19,700 --> 00:04:22,800
And now, a timeline of events.

70
00:04:22,800 --> 00:04:30,440
On Friday, May 16, 2003, Sylvia was only scheduled to work a half-day that Friday.

71
00:04:30,440 --> 00:04:35,320
One of her sons was visiting from out of town and she and both of her sons planned to spend

72
00:04:35,320 --> 00:04:36,600
the weekend together.

73
00:04:36,600 --> 00:04:41,280
They were celebrating a belated Mother's Day since her son had to work the previous

74
00:04:41,280 --> 00:04:43,000
weekend.

75
00:04:43,000 --> 00:04:44,720
Sylvia went about her morning.

76
00:04:44,720 --> 00:04:48,520
She had to call upper management about the front door being broken.

77
00:04:48,520 --> 00:04:53,560
Normally, they would have to buzz people into the bank, but the buzzer had been broken and

78
00:04:53,560 --> 00:04:56,160
anyone could just open the door.

79
00:04:56,160 --> 00:05:00,880
As the time ticked closer to Sylvia getting off work, the person who was scheduled to

80
00:05:00,880 --> 00:05:04,420
come in and relieve her called in sick.

81
00:05:04,420 --> 00:05:06,400
Sylvia had to stay at work.

82
00:05:06,400 --> 00:05:09,760
She was the only person working that afternoon.

83
00:05:09,760 --> 00:05:16,640
At around 12.50 p.m., Sylvia's son arrived at the bank to bring her lunch since she anticipated

84
00:05:16,640 --> 00:05:19,880
getting off and didn't bring one to work.

85
00:05:19,880 --> 00:05:23,340
Sylvia's son believes that he was at the bank for around 10 minutes.

86
00:05:23,340 --> 00:05:24,780
Him and his mother chatted.

87
00:05:24,780 --> 00:05:29,800
She walked him to the door and then she said, I'll see you after work.

88
00:05:29,800 --> 00:05:34,120
Sylvia was alone when he got there and she was alone when he left.

89
00:05:34,120 --> 00:05:38,560
After her son left, a regular customer came to the bank to do a wire transfer.

90
00:05:38,560 --> 00:05:44,920
He stayed for about 10 minutes and left after the wire transfer was complete.

91
00:05:44,920 --> 00:05:51,720
Sometime between 1.28 and 1.36 p.m., a bill trap alarm is triggered at the bank.

92
00:05:51,720 --> 00:05:56,400
Initially, newspapers reported that the time of the alarm was 1.36.

93
00:05:56,400 --> 00:06:02,480
However, over the years, that time has been pushed back to around 1.30 and even a few

94
00:06:02,480 --> 00:06:05,960
reports of 1.28 more recently.

95
00:06:05,960 --> 00:06:10,120
But sometime in those eight minutes, the bill trap alarm was triggered.

96
00:06:10,120 --> 00:06:15,120
A bill trap alarm, if you are not aware of what one is, because I really wasn't, is a

97
00:06:15,120 --> 00:06:20,440
silent alarm that when money is removed from it, it will trigger.

98
00:06:20,440 --> 00:06:27,160
Now police are unsure or haven't said when exactly the Barnes entered the bank.

99
00:06:27,160 --> 00:06:32,240
They needed to go to the bank that afternoon to transfer money to their IRA.

100
00:06:32,240 --> 00:06:37,200
Police are unsure if they entered the bank right before the robbery took place or if

101
00:06:37,200 --> 00:06:40,800
they walked in while the robbery was happening.

102
00:06:40,800 --> 00:06:45,280
After the bill trap alarm is set off, the security company calls the bank.

103
00:06:45,280 --> 00:06:50,280
They say that the phone was answered but immediately disconnected again.

104
00:06:50,280 --> 00:06:55,040
Several more attempts were made to call the bank, but when those go unanswered, the police

105
00:06:55,040 --> 00:06:57,440
are dispatched to the bank.

106
00:06:57,440 --> 00:07:03,120
Sylvia, Eb, and Maggie are led down a hallway to a break room.

107
00:07:03,120 --> 00:07:07,560
In the hallway leading to the back room was a device that would have been flashing bill

108
00:07:07,560 --> 00:07:10,700
trap, bill trap, bill trap.

109
00:07:10,700 --> 00:07:15,040
When police arrived 10 minutes after the alarm is tripped, they believe they are walking

110
00:07:15,040 --> 00:07:17,040
into a bank robbery.

111
00:07:17,040 --> 00:07:22,180
But there are only two cars in the parking lot, Sylvia's and the Barnes's car.

112
00:07:22,180 --> 00:07:26,600
And police say they did not pass any cars going to the bank since it sits on a dead

113
00:07:26,600 --> 00:07:27,640
end road.

114
00:07:27,640 --> 00:07:31,080
The car would have had to come the way the police were coming in.

115
00:07:31,080 --> 00:07:36,480
When police walk into the bank, they instead find a triple homicide.

116
00:07:36,480 --> 00:07:42,080
In the back break room were the bodies of Sylvia, Eb, and Maggie.

117
00:07:42,080 --> 00:07:46,040
All three had been shot with a.40 caliber Glock.

118
00:07:46,040 --> 00:07:51,440
Police have never confirmed, but a source told a local paper that Sylvia and Maggie

119
00:07:51,440 --> 00:07:56,160
were each shot in the head and Eb was shot in the chest.

120
00:07:56,160 --> 00:08:00,520
Police begin to secure the crime scene and the FBI are on their way since a big robbery

121
00:08:00,520 --> 00:08:03,080
is a federal crime.

122
00:08:03,080 --> 00:08:05,240
Cash is missing from the drawer.

123
00:08:05,240 --> 00:08:10,600
Police never confirm exactly how much was taken, but again that source told the local

124
00:08:10,600 --> 00:08:15,680
paper that only $2,000 to $3,000 was stolen from the bank.

125
00:08:15,680 --> 00:08:18,200
Also missing was the bank security tape.

126
00:08:18,200 --> 00:08:23,880
The security camera would have caught the suspect or suspects at some point after they

127
00:08:23,880 --> 00:08:25,320
entered the bank.

128
00:08:25,320 --> 00:08:30,040
With the missing tape, police are unsure if the robbers stole that before leaving or if

129
00:08:30,040 --> 00:08:33,440
Sylvia had forgotten to load the tape that morning.

130
00:08:33,440 --> 00:08:38,360
I want to mention here that Sylvia was very, very security cautious.

131
00:08:38,360 --> 00:08:42,700
She didn't like working at the bank alone and she even kept a notebook in her pocket

132
00:08:42,700 --> 00:08:45,720
of all the security procedures.

133
00:08:45,720 --> 00:08:50,720
In my opinion, it seems very unlikely that Sylvia would have forgotten this step in the

134
00:08:50,720 --> 00:08:52,400
morning.

135
00:08:52,400 --> 00:08:59,360
Looking at the scene, police and the FBI are baffled as to why this turned into a homicide.

136
00:08:59,360 --> 00:09:03,000
Typically bank robberies do not end with murder.

137
00:09:03,000 --> 00:09:05,400
Robbers are looking to get the money and get out.

138
00:09:05,400 --> 00:09:07,080
They're not there to kill.

139
00:09:07,080 --> 00:09:11,560
According to special agent Carol Allison, quote, we can tell from the crime scene that

140
00:09:11,560 --> 00:09:17,340
the people inside were compliant and the murders were not necessary, end quote.

141
00:09:17,340 --> 00:09:21,360
Police begin to fan out from the bank to look at other businesses in the area that might

142
00:09:21,360 --> 00:09:23,400
have a security camera.

143
00:09:23,400 --> 00:09:24,400
And they're in luck.

144
00:09:24,400 --> 00:09:29,160
A gas station had a camera pointed toward the road that led to the bank.

145
00:09:29,160 --> 00:09:33,480
During the time frame of the crime, there is a red car that can be seen driving towards

146
00:09:33,480 --> 00:09:38,680
the bank and then driving back towards the highway a few minutes later.

147
00:09:38,680 --> 00:09:44,360
Due to the angle and camera quality, police are unable to pull a license plate, but they

148
00:09:44,360 --> 00:09:49,300
believe it's either an Oldsmobile Alero or a Chevy Impala.

149
00:09:49,300 --> 00:09:55,780
A later 90 to early 2000s model also caught on camera is the Barnes's car driving right

150
00:09:55,780 --> 00:09:59,000
behind the red car towards the bank.

151
00:09:59,000 --> 00:10:04,560
There was also construction going on in the area and construction workers are questioned

152
00:10:04,560 --> 00:10:05,560
by police.

153
00:10:05,560 --> 00:10:10,520
They say they also saw a red car leaving the bank just a few minutes before the police

154
00:10:10,520 --> 00:10:11,520
show up.

155
00:10:11,520 --> 00:10:14,900
They believe there were at least two people in the car.

156
00:10:14,900 --> 00:10:17,920
The community is shocked by the triple homicide.

157
00:10:17,920 --> 00:10:20,840
Things like this just didn't happen in their town.

158
00:10:20,840 --> 00:10:26,680
The bank where the murders took place offers a $50,000 reward for information leading to

159
00:10:26,680 --> 00:10:28,300
the arrest.

160
00:10:28,300 --> 00:10:32,400
Even America's most wanted fly out that same weekend to shoot a segment to air the

161
00:10:32,400 --> 00:10:34,060
following week.

162
00:10:34,060 --> 00:10:39,000
Over the weekend, the FBI are confident that the case will be solved soon.

163
00:10:39,000 --> 00:10:43,240
Tips are pouring in from the public and the FBI is sure they'll be able to pinpoint the

164
00:10:43,240 --> 00:10:44,240
suspect.

165
00:10:44,240 --> 00:10:49,920
Quote, there are things unique to the crime scene that only the persons in there who committed

166
00:10:49,920 --> 00:10:51,560
the crime know.

167
00:10:51,560 --> 00:10:52,840
End quote.

168
00:10:52,840 --> 00:10:59,200
On Monday, May 19th, just three days after the murder, Sylvia is laid to rest.

169
00:10:59,200 --> 00:11:03,040
Over 900 people come out to pay their respects.

170
00:11:03,040 --> 00:11:07,760
A friend speaking at the funeral said, quote, she was Greer.

171
00:11:07,760 --> 00:11:10,440
Sylvia was Greer, South Carolina.

172
00:11:10,440 --> 00:11:12,120
End quote.

173
00:11:12,120 --> 00:11:17,080
The next day, police search the roadside leading up to the bank.

174
00:11:17,080 --> 00:11:22,960
When media asks what they're looking for, FBI Special Agent Allison says, quote, anything,

175
00:11:22,960 --> 00:11:26,560
any evidence of value that may have been tossed out of the vehicle.

176
00:11:26,560 --> 00:11:28,000
End quote.

177
00:11:28,000 --> 00:11:29,720
Police are sure they're closing in.

178
00:11:29,720 --> 00:11:32,600
Quote, we'd like to give you what it is.

179
00:11:32,600 --> 00:11:34,600
We're much closer than farther.

180
00:11:34,600 --> 00:11:36,240
End quote.

181
00:11:36,240 --> 00:11:44,200
On Wednesday, May 21st, five days after the murder, Eb and Maggie Barnes are laid to rest.

182
00:11:44,200 --> 00:11:47,640
Over 400 people come out to pay their respects.

183
00:11:47,640 --> 00:11:52,480
Maggie's brother says, quote, I'm sure their last thoughts were of each other.

184
00:11:52,480 --> 00:11:53,680
End quote.

185
00:11:53,680 --> 00:11:59,360
On Sunday, May 25th, so it's been nine days since the murder, police are asking for two

186
00:11:59,360 --> 00:12:02,000
truck drivers to come forward.

187
00:12:02,000 --> 00:12:07,160
These two trucks were getting off of the interstate at the same time as the red car, one just

188
00:12:07,160 --> 00:12:11,840
in front of the car and the other truck pulls up behind the red car.

189
00:12:11,840 --> 00:12:16,000
Police never confirm if they're able to find the drivers and question them, but they got

190
00:12:16,000 --> 00:12:19,400
a lot of tips on who these truck drivers could be.

191
00:12:19,400 --> 00:12:23,580
So they're hoping the truck drivers might have noticed something about the passengers

192
00:12:23,580 --> 00:12:24,880
inside.

193
00:12:24,880 --> 00:12:29,120
Police acknowledge that most bank robberies are solved in a few days, but they don't

194
00:12:29,120 --> 00:12:34,800
have any witnesses to the actual bank robbery with Sylvia, Eb and Maggie dead.

195
00:12:34,800 --> 00:12:38,720
They keep running into dead ends with lead after lead.

196
00:12:38,720 --> 00:12:45,160
On June 12th, 2003, so it's approaching one month since the murders, the FBI released

197
00:12:45,160 --> 00:12:47,720
a profile to the public.

198
00:12:47,720 --> 00:12:53,560
They say the culprit likely took work off unexpectedly around the time of the murders.

199
00:12:53,560 --> 00:12:58,880
Police say to watch for nervous behavior, changes in drinking or smoking, possibly doing

200
00:12:58,880 --> 00:13:02,480
more or stopping those things altogether.

201
00:13:02,480 --> 00:13:09,340
Police also say that there could be cuts and scrapes to the face and arms that are unexplained.

202
00:13:09,340 --> 00:13:13,160
Police say that the suspect could be trying to grow a beard or maybe have gotten a new

203
00:13:13,160 --> 00:13:16,120
haircut after the murders.

204
00:13:16,120 --> 00:13:21,440
Perhaps their faith has changed, either starting to go to church or stopping.

205
00:13:21,440 --> 00:13:25,520
Maybe they stopped driving their car and have gotten access to a new one recently.

206
00:13:25,520 --> 00:13:30,040
However, after this, there are few updates from the police.

207
00:13:30,040 --> 00:13:34,960
The murders stay in the news with the community holding vigils and prayer services, but no

208
00:13:34,960 --> 00:13:38,280
new information is released.

209
00:13:38,280 --> 00:13:44,320
In April of 2004, just a month before the one-year anniversary, the Blue Ridge Savings

210
00:13:44,320 --> 00:13:46,480
Bank is robbed again.

211
00:13:46,480 --> 00:13:49,600
Well, attempted robbery at least.

212
00:13:49,600 --> 00:13:55,200
The bank employee was walking into the bank when a man pulled up in a green Chevrolet,

213
00:13:55,200 --> 00:13:58,840
pointed a gun and ordered the man stop at the front door.

214
00:13:58,840 --> 00:14:03,600
The employee ran for it and the would-be robber drove off.

215
00:14:03,600 --> 00:14:09,360
I wasn't able to find an update on if this particular robbery was solved or attempted

216
00:14:09,360 --> 00:14:10,360
robbery.

217
00:14:10,360 --> 00:14:16,360
Now, from this point forward, basically at the one-year mark, there are small pieces

218
00:14:16,360 --> 00:14:21,440
of information that come out through the media over the years, but most of those details

219
00:14:21,440 --> 00:14:24,240
I've already mentioned in the timeline.

220
00:14:24,240 --> 00:14:28,240
So I thought I would just take a few minutes here to talk about suspects that have emerged

221
00:14:28,240 --> 00:14:29,920
in the case.

222
00:14:29,920 --> 00:14:34,840
The first two strong suspects in the case were arrested just days after the murders.

223
00:14:34,840 --> 00:14:38,040
However, police ultimately let them go.

224
00:14:38,040 --> 00:14:41,080
They're never even named publicly.

225
00:14:41,080 --> 00:14:46,280
Another suspect was brought in for questioning after he was caught robbing another bank.

226
00:14:46,280 --> 00:14:50,180
He confesses to robbing banks for over six years.

227
00:14:50,180 --> 00:14:56,200
His particular MO was to strike on Friday afternoon, the same time the Blue Ridge Savings

228
00:14:56,200 --> 00:14:58,080
Bank murders happened.

229
00:14:58,080 --> 00:15:03,880
However, he has a rock-solid alibi and he is also eliminated.

230
00:15:03,880 --> 00:15:06,360
Another suspect is Todd Kohlhepp.

231
00:15:06,360 --> 00:15:11,980
He is a convicted serial killer and he's tied to this case because he shot four people

232
00:15:11,980 --> 00:15:16,080
dead inside of a shop called Superbike Motorsports.

233
00:15:16,080 --> 00:15:20,800
Kohlhepp has denied being involved in the Blue Ridge Savings Bank murders and police

234
00:15:20,800 --> 00:15:26,160
have never been able to tie him to Greer during May of 2003.

235
00:15:26,160 --> 00:15:29,560
So that brings me to the final two suspects.

236
00:15:29,560 --> 00:15:32,080
One is a man named Emerson Wright.

237
00:15:32,080 --> 00:15:38,640
He had stolen a red Oldsmobile Alero from an airport rental car agency at the beginning

238
00:15:38,640 --> 00:15:42,520
of May 2003, just weeks before the murder.

239
00:15:42,520 --> 00:15:48,000
After the murder, when he is driving the stolen car, he gets pulled over, but he runs from

240
00:15:48,000 --> 00:15:51,960
the cops on foot and escapes in a wooded area.

241
00:15:51,960 --> 00:15:57,080
About a year and a half later, he'll get pulled over by police again.

242
00:15:57,080 --> 00:16:03,160
This time, he'll step out of the car and take his own life with a.40 caliber gun, the same

243
00:16:03,160 --> 00:16:06,480
type of weapon used in the murders.

244
00:16:06,480 --> 00:16:10,960
Police have eliminated his gun as being the murder weapon.

245
00:16:10,960 --> 00:16:15,520
But because he died, police have never been able to question him fully about the Blue

246
00:16:15,520 --> 00:16:18,120
Ridge Savings Bank murders.

247
00:16:18,120 --> 00:16:25,840
And the final suspect or person of interest came to our attention in May of 2013, 10 years

248
00:16:25,840 --> 00:16:27,520
after the murder.

249
00:16:27,520 --> 00:16:32,040
The FBI announced that they're trying to track down a man that was seen at the bank

250
00:16:32,040 --> 00:16:34,440
just prior to the robbery.

251
00:16:34,440 --> 00:16:43,200
He would have been 50 to 53 years of age in 2003, between 5'6 and 5'8 and around 230

252
00:16:43,200 --> 00:16:44,200
pounds.

253
00:16:44,200 --> 00:16:48,240
He's white with blonde hair and touches of gray.

254
00:16:48,240 --> 00:16:50,480
Police say he was a very clean cut.

255
00:16:50,480 --> 00:16:56,720
This suspect that the FBI are looking for is who they have on their poster for this

256
00:16:56,720 --> 00:16:57,720
case.

257
00:16:57,720 --> 00:17:01,640
So this is still somebody that they appear to be actively looking for.

258
00:17:01,640 --> 00:17:07,460
But that is really all we know about the Blue Ridge Savings Bank murders.

259
00:17:07,460 --> 00:17:14,280
So if you know anything about the murder of Sylvia Haltzclaw, Ed Barnes, and Maggie Barnes

260
00:17:14,280 --> 00:17:25,360
in May of 2003, please call the FBI office in Greenville at 803-551-4200 or the Greer

261
00:17:25,360 --> 00:17:32,000
Police Department at 864-848-2151.

262
00:17:32,000 --> 00:17:37,080
So that is the case of the Blue Ridge Savings Bank murders.

263
00:17:37,080 --> 00:17:44,560
I think with cold cases like these, it's very easy to lump three people together.

264
00:17:44,560 --> 00:17:49,240
At least to me, it seems like the story can be less personal in that way.

265
00:17:49,240 --> 00:17:55,280
And I really appreciate how personal you make it.

266
00:17:55,280 --> 00:18:04,120
It was delightful to learn about who each of these people were, Sylvia, Ed, and Maggie,

267
00:18:04,120 --> 00:18:10,000
equally as heartbreaking because they are no longer with us.

268
00:18:10,000 --> 00:18:17,700
And in this case, it felt very important to highlight the lives that they lived before

269
00:18:17,700 --> 00:18:19,480
they were taken.

270
00:18:19,480 --> 00:18:20,480
Thank you.

271
00:18:20,480 --> 00:18:21,760
That's something I'm very conscious of.

272
00:18:21,760 --> 00:18:28,040
And when we first started the podcast, we wanted it to be very centered on the victims

273
00:18:28,040 --> 00:18:30,400
in these crimes or the person missing.

274
00:18:30,400 --> 00:18:35,560
So it's always very intentional, all those details I give about the person and the life

275
00:18:35,560 --> 00:18:36,560
they lived.

276
00:18:36,560 --> 00:18:37,560
Yeah.

277
00:18:37,560 --> 00:18:43,560
And with that, I really just wanted to say that I love the name, Eb.

278
00:18:43,560 --> 00:18:49,340
In my mind, when you said it, I immediately countered with Eb and Flo.

279
00:18:49,340 --> 00:18:51,760
And that's just kind of how I saw him.

280
00:18:51,760 --> 00:18:56,660
And when you described him, he seemed like that kind of guy that just had a good time

281
00:18:56,660 --> 00:19:02,840
in life and enjoyed himself, enjoyed his marriage and his kids.

282
00:19:02,840 --> 00:19:08,080
And I don't know, again, he was delightful to learn about.

283
00:19:08,080 --> 00:19:16,000
Eb and Maggie really led a very enriching and beautiful life together.

284
00:19:16,000 --> 00:19:20,440
Had been married for so long and had raised three children together.

285
00:19:20,440 --> 00:19:26,120
And then they did this historical clothing thing together.

286
00:19:26,120 --> 00:19:28,080
The pictures of them are so sweet.

287
00:19:28,080 --> 00:19:35,280
And I can just imagine what their lecture was like on historical clothing or the talk

288
00:19:35,280 --> 00:19:36,280
they gave.

289
00:19:36,280 --> 00:19:39,880
I'd love to listen to that or see that.

290
00:19:39,880 --> 00:19:48,560
I know I haven't seen any pictures of Maggie's art, but she just sounded awesome, like a

291
00:19:48,560 --> 00:19:53,920
creative artistic spirit that I really enjoyed hearing about.

292
00:19:53,920 --> 00:19:59,600
Weaving Tapestry seems like a very difficult artistic adventure.

293
00:19:59,600 --> 00:20:02,280
So it's so impressive to me.

294
00:20:02,280 --> 00:20:09,720
And Sylvia, of course, was the greer community, as her friend said during her funeral.

295
00:20:09,720 --> 00:20:15,200
She really was a figure around town and knew everybody.

296
00:20:15,200 --> 00:20:16,200
Everybody knew her.

297
00:20:16,200 --> 00:20:17,200
Everybody loved her.

298
00:20:17,200 --> 00:20:20,920
Like she was, it felt like the matriarch of Greer.

299
00:20:20,920 --> 00:20:23,640
She was everybody's mom.

300
00:20:23,640 --> 00:20:27,040
And you hit the nail on the head, matriarch of the community.

301
00:20:27,040 --> 00:20:31,720
I love that she was well known and well respected.

302
00:20:31,720 --> 00:20:32,720
Absolutely.

303
00:20:32,720 --> 00:20:38,760
And she was in this leadership position at the bank.

304
00:20:38,760 --> 00:20:39,760
I think it's incredible.

305
00:20:39,760 --> 00:20:41,600
I think she was incredible.

306
00:20:41,600 --> 00:20:47,360
With that being said, though, and focusing more on what happened during the robbery,

307
00:20:47,360 --> 00:20:55,600
it still baffles my mind that people are allowed to close any establishment, any store, restaurant,

308
00:20:55,600 --> 00:20:58,640
bank, what have you, alone.

309
00:20:58,640 --> 00:21:06,240
I know I said closing, but I just mean as far as operations go, at least for me, there

310
00:21:06,240 --> 00:21:13,200
should always be two people there in a business establishment.

311
00:21:13,200 --> 00:21:14,800
I wholeheartedly agree with that.

312
00:21:14,800 --> 00:21:18,880
And it's something that I talk about a lot, actually, with people whenever I see that

313
00:21:18,880 --> 00:21:20,720
they're working alone.

314
00:21:20,720 --> 00:21:26,700
I never think anyone should be working alone, not only for safety reasons, but also what

315
00:21:26,700 --> 00:21:30,440
if somebody trips and hits their head or chokes on something?

316
00:21:30,440 --> 00:21:31,920
It's just safety.

317
00:21:31,920 --> 00:21:37,480
And it's just like, you should always have two people working in your establishment.

318
00:21:37,480 --> 00:21:38,480
Exactly.

319
00:21:38,480 --> 00:21:40,920
I couldn't agree more.

320
00:21:40,920 --> 00:21:42,600
This is more just a comment.

321
00:21:42,600 --> 00:21:48,760
I think it's wild that the crime happening and the cops showing up.

322
00:21:48,760 --> 00:21:50,960
It's such a small amount of time.

323
00:21:50,960 --> 00:21:55,480
The police response time was 10 minutes from the time the alarm was triggered to when they

324
00:21:55,480 --> 00:21:57,040
roll up to the bank.

325
00:21:57,040 --> 00:22:06,400
The robbers got in, got out within 10 minutes, essentially, or just a little under since

326
00:22:06,400 --> 00:22:10,520
the cops didn't run into them coming up that road.

327
00:22:10,520 --> 00:22:17,320
A question that I did write down, and I know that it's one that really no one can answer

328
00:22:17,320 --> 00:22:27,000
at this time, but my question is, is it possible that the person came and left on foot and

329
00:22:27,000 --> 00:22:31,880
the search for the car is maybe obsolete?

330
00:22:31,880 --> 00:22:34,960
That is something that I have also considered.

331
00:22:34,960 --> 00:22:41,360
Did the person maybe approach on foot and leave on foot?

332
00:22:41,360 --> 00:22:45,000
The bank, as I mentioned, it does sit right on an interstate.

333
00:22:45,000 --> 00:22:48,360
You can see it from the interstate.

334
00:22:48,360 --> 00:22:54,320
There is like open land around it, but I don't think that it's impossible that someone came

335
00:22:54,320 --> 00:22:58,080
on foot and got away on foot.

336
00:22:58,080 --> 00:23:04,760
Something that I wrote down about Sylvia was that Sylvia didn't forget the step.

337
00:23:04,760 --> 00:23:12,120
A step like that is automatic in opening duties or when you're running the shift.

338
00:23:12,120 --> 00:23:18,880
I wholeheartedly believe that she remembered to put that tape in and it was taken by the

339
00:23:18,880 --> 00:23:22,160
person who ended her life.

340
00:23:22,160 --> 00:23:28,640
I think that suggests something in and of itself as a clue.

341
00:23:28,640 --> 00:23:30,200
I can talk myself in circles on it.

342
00:23:30,200 --> 00:23:35,860
On the one hand, it seems like you would have to kind of have knowledge of where the tape

343
00:23:35,860 --> 00:23:41,880
is kept in order to get it as quickly as the robbers did getting in and getting out.

344
00:23:41,880 --> 00:23:45,960
But then on the other hand, the bank was just a double wide trailer.

345
00:23:45,960 --> 00:23:53,160
There's really not that many places to go and you could search the place pretty quickly.

346
00:23:53,160 --> 00:24:01,320
I go back and forward on if it was taken because they knew and it was planned or if it was

347
00:24:01,320 --> 00:24:05,640
just spur of the moment, they weren't expecting to do a murder and now they have to take this

348
00:24:05,640 --> 00:24:08,920
tape.

349
00:24:08,920 --> 00:24:16,200
The small amount, not that $2,000 to $3,000 is a small amount of money, but I think for

350
00:24:16,200 --> 00:24:19,840
a robbery, it's not much.

351
00:24:19,840 --> 00:24:26,480
I guess for me, in my mind, I think if someone is committing a robbery at a bank, you're

352
00:24:26,480 --> 00:24:31,680
trying to take upwards of $10,000.

353
00:24:31,680 --> 00:24:39,000
I agree with you that for a bank robbery, $2,000 to $3,000 seems very minimal and it's

354
00:24:39,000 --> 00:24:43,860
not that you can ever put a price on a human life, but it's like you're doing all of this

355
00:24:43,860 --> 00:24:46,720
for $2,000 to $3,000.

356
00:24:46,720 --> 00:24:47,920
Come on.

357
00:24:47,920 --> 00:24:56,440
People often when they are making large mistakes in their life, you will find that that mistake

358
00:24:56,440 --> 00:25:00,220
is tied to money.

359
00:25:00,220 --> 00:25:08,760
People will make the most stupid and most vicious decisions surrounding money.

360
00:25:08,760 --> 00:25:13,600
Moving forward for this case, I really hope that there's more evidence that the police

361
00:25:13,600 --> 00:25:18,800
and FBI have, whether that be DNA, whether that be other security footage that they're

362
00:25:18,800 --> 00:25:22,560
just not releasing to the public.

363
00:25:22,560 --> 00:25:27,160
I hope that this case gets solved because it's solvable.

364
00:25:27,160 --> 00:25:32,200
It's all right there in those 10 minutes, essentially.

365
00:25:32,200 --> 00:25:35,960
All the answers are right there and it's so frustrating that they're just out of reach

366
00:25:35,960 --> 00:25:42,800
for so many people, so many families affected by this, two major families.

367
00:25:42,800 --> 00:25:49,320
But then you think about all of the cousins, the uncles, the aunts, the friends, the families,

368
00:25:49,320 --> 00:25:52,920
community devastated by this senseless act.

369
00:25:52,920 --> 00:25:58,000
So I really hope that the families get the answers they're looking for, they get justice,

370
00:25:58,000 --> 00:26:00,880
and the community gets justice.

371
00:26:00,880 --> 00:26:05,120
They get to know that this person is no longer walking around with them.

372
00:26:05,120 --> 00:26:06,120
Yeah.

373
00:26:06,120 --> 00:26:12,940
You know, from the sounds of that community, as much sadness and sorrow and unfairness

374
00:26:12,940 --> 00:26:20,800
that they have experienced, because the community is so big and beautiful and connected, the

375
00:26:20,800 --> 00:26:24,800
healing can be there as well, and they deserve it.

376
00:26:24,800 --> 00:26:29,280
The loved ones, the friends, the family, the community.

377
00:26:29,280 --> 00:26:30,360
Absolutely.

378
00:26:30,360 --> 00:26:35,960
And again, if you know anything about the Blue Ridge Saving Bank murders, please call

379
00:26:35,960 --> 00:26:50,000
the FBI office in Greenville at 803-551-4200 or the Greer Police Department at 864-848-2151.

380
00:26:50,000 --> 00:26:55,080
And of course, we will have pictures of Sylvia, Eb, and Maggie up on our Instagram, as well

381
00:26:55,080 --> 00:27:02,000
as pictures from the surveillance footage of that red car and the suspect sketch, the

382
00:27:02,000 --> 00:27:06,080
most recent one from 2013 that the FBI are actively seeking.

383
00:27:06,080 --> 00:27:12,340
This is the man that was seen right before the robberies took place at the bank.

384
00:27:12,340 --> 00:27:15,700
If you're not following us on Instagram where we're posting those pictures, you can find

385
00:27:15,700 --> 00:27:17,280
us at Cold and Missing.

386
00:27:17,280 --> 00:27:19,420
We'll pop right up.

387
00:27:19,420 --> 00:27:23,880
And if you have a minute today, if you could take the time to leave us a review, you can

388
00:27:23,880 --> 00:27:26,760
do that on whatever platform you're listening on.

389
00:27:26,760 --> 00:27:31,440
But if you're on Apple Podcasts, leaving us a written review really helps other people

390
00:27:31,440 --> 00:27:36,420
find the podcast, try out the podcast, and get these cases out there.

391
00:27:36,420 --> 00:27:42,000
So many of the reviews we get is that these are cases that you've never heard of or that

392
00:27:42,000 --> 00:27:43,640
are not covered as often.

393
00:27:43,640 --> 00:27:49,060
So just by you reviewing, you're getting these cases out there to more people.

394
00:27:49,060 --> 00:27:52,200
So you're doing the work too, just by supporting the pod.

395
00:27:52,200 --> 00:27:56,980
So thank you so much if you do it today or if you've already done it.

396
00:27:56,980 --> 00:28:01,840
And you can also review us on our website, www.coldandmissing.com, where we also have

397
00:28:01,840 --> 00:28:04,780
transcripts of all of our episodes.

398
00:28:04,780 --> 00:28:09,620
So if you or someone you love is hard of hearing, you can follow along there.

399
00:28:09,620 --> 00:28:11,880
That is all I have for this week, though.

400
00:28:11,880 --> 00:28:14,240
Thank you so much for listening to Cold and Missing.

401
00:28:14,240 --> 00:28:16,020
I'm your host, Allie.

402
00:28:16,020 --> 00:28:17,820
And I'm your co-host, Eli.

403
00:28:17,820 --> 00:28:19,920
Have a good week and stay safe, y'all.

404
00:28:19,920 --> 00:28:48,480
Stay safe, y'all.
